    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Narrow clutch disengagement

The clutch on my '82 GS1100E works just fine, but it has a VERY narrow disengagement. If I just touch the lever, it will slip, even under modest throttle. As long as I don't touch the lever, it doesn't slip under wide open throttle in any gear, and I have about a half inch of free play at the lever. Bike has 30,000 miles on it. I planned on replacing springs, should I just plan on fiber plates as well, while the cover is off????
 
There is some free play. I moved the arm over one spline to ensure it wasn't being held up by the cable.
 
If you have half an inch of freeplay, yet it slips if you touch the lever, something is definitely not adjusted correctly.

The half inch of free play or the narrow engagement??? The half inch of freeplay is intentional, meant to rule out a too tight clutch cable.

Neither one is right. I'm sorry that I can't offer any advice. Some things are difficult to diagnose via the forum.
 
No problem. I just checked after a ride; there's about 1/8" free play at the clutch activation lever on the engine, a similar amount right at the clutch lever/perch (1/2" at the end of the lever). The engine side lever moves freely and if you move it fast, you can hear a click inside the cases where it engages. So all seems good as far as external adjustment goes. I'll plan to replace the fiber clutches along with the springs once winter comes. Meanwhile, it works just fine, as long as I keep away from the clutch lever.
