Near wipe-out

One of the roads into my town is about 3/4 mile of downhill. You can coast it if you want to.

Near the bottom of the hill today there's some construction going on, so flaggers are directing traffic into one lane.

Middle of this lane is a long and wide strip of oil. Going with the road, not across it.

Man did that suck, cuz I had to cross it. That was not a fun few seconds.

But I stayed upright :clap: and didn't even soil myself :clap::clap:

Friends of mine were in Mexico many, many (many) years ago, hit an oily patch of road that was slightly uphill, in a curve. They were towing a trailer with their GT750, the sudden loss of traction under the rear tire took them out. They went across the road and over a small cliff that was about 10 feet high. Both of them survived, but were banged up pretty badly. Their daughter and nephew, who were following on their bikes saw them go down in time to avoid the oil themselves.

Going back to the location, the nephew says it looked like somebody's old car/truck dropped the oil pan and everything just went everywhere across the road.

I take it that comment was a typo and you meant to say that you didn't oil yourself.

Not long after I got my 700 back in '85 I was on US281 coming into downtown San Antonio. The last few miles of 281 before you hit downtown is a series of fast sweepers, maybe a half dozen. I was leaned over hard and ran across a puddle of oil in my lane. The bike skid at both ends pretty severely. I was in traffic so all I could do was hold my line and hope for the best. Just one of those Oh Schitt moments.

I remember reading somewhere here about a GSer who wrecked over chicken fat that was dripping out of a truck, IIRC. Who was it, folks? What happened?

And yeah, I don't imagine a call to PennDOT would do much more than use up some of the minutes on my phone. :|

It was bwringer. Similiar situation, grease on road, slow sweeper and slid into the curb. Smashed bike, broken leg, etc.......he went back after he got out of the hospital and the grease was still smeared on the curve.

jonr and dpep had a similar incident at the NC Rally last year or two years ago. Both went down at low speeds and suffered little mechanical or physical damage..... There was a trail of some oily substance along the road for several miles, I believe.

Ouch.

When I'm in the truck driving along I can typically see oil drops but how would I notice other grease stains (been lucky enough not to yet)? What's the right way to react if I get caught in one?

Sorry for all the questions but my GS is my first bike so I want to be ready when I get it running.

I was driving a Jetta through mountains in Mexico, when I hit a huge patch of oil. A 55 gallon drum of oil, probably.I did several donuts. Could have gone down a cliff that was at least several hundred feet. It took several hundred miles for normal traction to return.

my first ride this season went kinda like that. Black ice is pretty hard to detect in the shade. (the frost on my yard that morning should have been a red flag, the hypothermia after the ride sure was.) I think the weathermen at TWC are on crack this year. been wrong everytime I check their website.

Stay out of the center of the lane at city intersections. I know that MSF and your teachings tell you to "OWN YOUR LANE" and ride in the center, but in town, I do not. That is where cars usually leave their "droppings", antifreeze, oil, water from condensors for A/C units, etc.

Even if you are very careful to stay in the tire track, watch where your right foot goes as you put it down when you stop.

Went for a clown burger this afternoon. Parked, dropped the side stand, stepped into a the center of the parking slot with my right foot and slid. Good thing the bike was leaning to the left.
It isn't only the food the clown sells that greasy.
