As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

Need advice on pipes/airbox/jets for a '82 GS1100E

Hi guys,

Been searching forums up one side and down the other, still very undecided of what to do.

My '82 GS1100E apparently had a fire near the battery at one point, and my stock airbox is missing the snorkel and is partially melted. Looks like these guys are fairly hard to find... So, I am considering getting some pod filters. Of course, this seems to require the Dynojet kit, so I'm looking at $180+. Ouch! Over the winter I had planned on moving to fuel injection using Megasquirt, so perhaps the pods would be a good investment for this? Granted, then I will have $120 into a Dynojet kit I will no longer need. Anyone have a snorkel they want to sell? Or know where I can buy one? And for the pods, what the right size? I suppose I could go measure... ;)

As for pipes, my stock pipes were removed by the PO and thrown away due to rust. So, I plan on ordering some pipes tomorrow. But I'm still on the fence about what I want. The Vance and Hines chrome 4-1 kit looks pretty good, but I kinda wanted black exhaust. I've been told chrome is the way to go as it does not rust out as quick as black/painted. Any suggestions other than the Vance and Hines?

Could I get away with just some jetting and not buy the whole Dynojet kit? I realize there will be a lot of tuning required here, but if I can get into a ball park for cheaper... maybe... hehe

My goal with this bike is mostly to hit the drag strip with, but I would like for it to be streetable. As such, I am avoiding drag-race only stuff for the time being.

Thanks all for the info. Still have a lot of work to do on the basket case, but I hope to go play with it at the track this month sometime.

You will have a tough time finding much in the way of exhaust (4-1) aside from the VH unless you troll ebay often. The old school canister pipes are snapped up pretty quick and dont usually go for cheap if theyre in good shape. If you want the bike to be streetable at ALL, spend the money, buy the dynojet kit, you simply cant make the bike run well at all with pods without it. You can try, you can pull your hair out or just live with huge flat spots in the rev range, or you can spend 130 bucks and get the kit and put it in and be done. Its not the jets, its the NEEDLES that are most important here. For extra seat of the pants fun, source a set of BS36SS (GS1150) carbs, they will wake that bike up a bit....and if you REALLY wanna get into some stuff...well...there are alllllllll KINDS of things you can do, but you'll be shelling out the bucks too. First and foremost tho, I would suggest you spend the money on the DJ kit, get your clutch basket set up with a heavy duty backing plate and welded (bad things happen when they go boom...and they just might at any time) and get some 750 oil pump gears to replace the stock pump gears. These will increase flow rate, and help assure that you are keeping that motor nice and lubed and cool...

Interesting points. I'm staring down the barrel of a large denniskirk order here, sheeesh.. gotta start somewhere eh? Looks like the Vance and Hines exhaust is pretty much the easiest way or going at this point.

No matter which exhaust you choose, I would have it ceramic coated both inside and out. Much better than paint.
