A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Need o-rings and jets.

Also how do the needle jets come out for cleaning?

Orings from Robert Barr at www.cycleorings.com. $12 and they should be in your mailbox in 2 or 3 days.

I take my needle jets out by loosening the main jet a few turns, then tapping on it a little to loosen it up (it pushes up through the carb throat, you need to take the slide out), then remove the main jet. It should slide right out.

Where do I get this needle? I know I need one and I only have one carb apart...

that's not the needle jet... that's the air/fuel mix screws..

I have three gs550's at my house with those carbs and have worked on them an awfule lot...

to get the needles out you need a pair of needle nose pliers...

after you pull the top off the carb and remove the slides/diaphram assembly grab one of the two slides and look down it from the top... tug the needle itself gently till it won't pull out anymore and use a pair of needle nose pliers to firmly tug out the white plastic retainer... the pliers should be 90 degrees from the needle/slide... if you can wait till later this evening I'll grab one of my spares and get pics....

I can't send you any of the mix screws though as all of mine are chewed up pretty badly by the previous owners...

I know it isn't the needle jet, but I was hoping it wasn't the air screw...

Oh well...I got the rest of the jets ID'd in the SUDCO catalog.. depending on prices I may just go new all the way around.

Carb rebuild kits

Carb rebuild kits

Dennis Kirk and cyclewareables.com both have K&L complete carb rebuid kits for a very reasonable price. Check'em out.

K&L are ok if you just need the fuel screw , gasket, maybe O rings.
The float needle & jets are questionable IF the original jets are not usable GET THE OEM

carb kits for '83 gs 550 l

carb kits for '83 gs 550 l

I've got the same bike - just recently - and I'm having a tough time finding a rebuild kit. I've checked denniskirk.com, sudco.com, partsunlimited, cyclewareables.com, bikebandit.com and several others, as well as some local shops. K & L does not have a listing in it's catalog for any 1983 550, according to the shop and what I've found online. Keyster may make one, but I've had a tough time determining which Keyster kit would work for the double barrel Mikuni BSW30 carbs. Has anyone with an '83-86 been able to find the kit, or do you usually get O-rings from Robert Barr and order piece-by-piece from one of the online suppliers? Thanks.

Just piece by piece... the carbs for the 550's from 83 - 86 are the red headed step childeren of Mikuni... if you call mikuni and ask... they refuse to acknowledge they ever made em... or at least that's what happened when we and our local distibutor got on the phone with mikuni...

I've recently used crotchrocket.com and thier parts fiche parts finder. They seem pretty good, and their prices are low, but I have switched to my local Suzuki shop to order parts--when I consider the shipping costs from crotchrocket.com, the (somewhat) higher prices and faster delivery from my local shop are worth it.

So far, my local shop has been able to order everything I need. I don't know if they're making any money off of me, but I'd rather use the local guys than a far-off place.
