A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

I have been searching through the forum archives and can't find an answer so i'm posting a new thread. I took off my stator cover to check out the stator (not burnt up which is relieving). The gasket broke when I took it off and I can't find any parts store that has it. Do you guys know anywhere on the net that has this? And what exactly is it called? A magneto gasket maybe? I'm finding lots of parts for the GS450 but not the 400, but i'm guessing the 450 is a stroked 400. If anyone can tell me if 450 parts cross over i'd appreciate it.

Or secondly can I just use some oil resistant permatex stuff and make my own gasket?

Get a sheet of thin gasket material & make your own gasket DO NOT TRY & USE RTV ONLY it will effect the clearance of the starter idler gear and cause it to bind up

Listen to Lynn! He knows his sh*t.
P.S Thanks for the tank emblem. Looks good!

As I have recently learned, the 81gs400's were european bikes. If your looking at north american part suppliers then you are not going to find anything.

I'm told for jsut about everything but the engine, the 81gs450 is a decent match. I'm not sure about the rest of the drive train.

I'm told this site is good for finding out if parts can be interchanged.

Thanks for the advice on making a gasket. I went to Suzuki and just like the previous guy said, there aren't any in North America. My title says it's a 1981 Suzuki GS4 and then cuts off. At the Suzuki shop, we checked out a gasket from a 450 to see if it would fit on that cover and it wouldn't. So, I know my engine is not a 450. My bike has some titling issues and I'm wondering if it has a switched out title because it definately looks like a GS400. I am thinking I have a 1978 GS400 with a 1981 GS450 title. I'll post this picture and you guys tell me what you think. The frame has GS400 stamped on it but the VIN sticker has been taken off. http://s67.photobucket.com/albums/h304/wrsimmons21/?sc=1&addtype=local

hey, I had trouble IDing my bike to. Check out "Mystery GS400" in the general discussion.

Chances are your engine serial number doesn't match your frame, and no garage has any clue where to get parts.

as for engine parts. use that site i posted before and you should be able to check to see if 78 parts are useable on 81's.
