A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Hi GS People,
I have a 79 GS550E (8-valve) with dead stator.....(AGAIN)....Electrex doesn't list one for the 79 model although I think other models right fit....
There is one on ebay from a 89 GS700ES that looks like it would fit but I need to move fast on it or buy one somewhere else as I need to get this bike under it's own power fast (time is gas money)......
Also does anyone know of somewhere else that I can get one like electrex that would not blow out everytime the wind blows.......
Signed,
Frustrated....

I have seen a few posts bragging about the rebuilt stators from Tim Parrott Enterprises. About $70 plus shipping. Not much of a website, but the electrical work is good, and that is what counts.

Mr. tudawg7,

I recently installed a unit from RMStator. They also have an ebay store and may sell your model a little cheaper there. I got mine for $101 delivered. Real people work there, will answer the phone, and they gave me great service. The part has been installed for only a few months. It's working great but I can't personally speak to its longevity. But others here have had good luck with them. I just thought I'd mention another option for you.

Thank you for your indulgence,

BassCliff

Howdy tudawg. My advice is to sloooooowwwwwwww down sir! A couple of points in your post need addressing. First and foremost is that it sounds like your bike is eating stators and it's THE REASON FOR THIS is what you ought to address. Secondly, I also have looked at boxes full of old stators at bike swap meets and on tables that "looked like" they'd fit or be a suitable core but without detailed physical dimensions to compare, you're taking quite a chance (not to mention whether the used one is even electrically sound!).

Maybe you have an old stator from a previous replacement. If so, take a stab at rewinding it yourself OR see if you can solicit some help locally from a bike, small engine or buy some expertise at a local motor rewind shop. Once you have this unit running again, take the time to learn and troubleshoot why you've been having problems (search the archives on here for sure!).

Hope this nudges you in a working direction at least.

One of the items that lies in the direction he is nudging you would be The Stator Papers.
This is a good troubleshooting tree that will identify problems in the charging system with just a few rather simple tests.

By the way, one of the common causes of blown stators is a bad rectifier/regulator. Another cause could be faulty wiring.
Follow the tests in The Stator Papers and you will soon know.

Absolutely. Pull the tank and headlight while you're waiting for a stator and clean all the connectors and ground locations, it shouldn't take more than an hour or so and will be time well spent. Check the R/R and if there is any doubt about it's condition just replace it with a Honda one. You can find them cheap on eBay or you can get one already configured for your bike from one of our members. http://www.thegsresources.com/_forum/showthread.php?t=106882&highlight=honda+R/R Good Luck. Oh yeah, it never hurts to run an extra ground right from the R/R to the battery.

I have to agree in a big way. Do this first.

Long story short. My Gs was charging but barely and I didn't really notice it until I put a voltage metre on the bike just after Xmas. I also was having charging issues with my XS which appeared after starting it up after a 6 month hiatus. In both cases, ran the wire as suggested..... now charging fine on both bikes.

Grounds on these old bikes are always an issue and the resident electrical guru on the XS site says over and over.....check and clean all grounds first. It seems to be the best advice.

Hope you get your problems sorted.

Keep us informed of your progress.

Good luck,
Spyug.
