    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

After tearing my bike apart to replace the rear splines in the wheel, I can't get the rear drive unit to seat into the new splines. At first I thought maybe they didn't match up but I checked with the rear splines pulled out and they fit. Yet nothing I can do is getting them to mesh up. I've tried with the wheel on the ground and the rear drive unit on the ground . I've picked it up and rotated it by the eighth of an inch but it won't budge. I don't have the money to just drop all the parts off at a shop and pay for disassembly so at this point I'm about ready to sell it to a scrapyard. Just hoping somebody here has something I've missed to get this damn thing over with.
 
You've tried fitting the new wheel hub that is attached to the rear wheel onto the rear axle drive splines and it does fit, correct? Yet you can't get the rear wheel with the new driven hub to fit onto the axle's drive splines when it's attached to the wheel? Never had that problem before. You just life the wheel and rock/rotate the wheel until it slips over the drive spline. It's a pretty straight forward operation.

Nothing has been changed other than the driven hub in the wheel correct?


 
I have not a clue if this will work with a GS.
On the Nighthawk shaft drive I owned I removed the shocks and it made it very easy.
I had a bike lift though and was able to lower and raise the bike as needed to reattach the shocks.

here is what I'm looking at. which is why I don't get why this is such a pain. I take the rear drive unit, flip it over, and it won't mesh.I can't see anything else which is hitting yet when I pull the rear splines out of the wheel and play with them for a few minutes I can get them on.

edit: this is as far as they will go. http://imgur.com/JS79zWH I tried putting the rear drive unit on the bike and still couldn't get any closer together.

It's an 82 GS1100GK .the only piece replaced was the shiny new silver splines in the wheel. since I ordered the new P/N for the unit (hardened so it won't strip) will I need a new spacer to fit it all together?
 
No you wont need a new spacer. If it was together with the old spacer it will go back together without changing a thing.
 
The three metal retainers are in the groove of the new spline correct?
Have you tried putting the axle housing on the wheel spline while the wheel was on the ground?

The 3 retainers are all sitting in the groove, with the lock-retainer things and 2 bolts through each.

That's why I don't get how this is an issue, at all. I can't tell if something is getting in the way because of the limited visibility.

I've even tried running the axle bolt through both assemblies so I KNOW they are lined up. Drop it on top, rotate it a little, drop it down. Rinse and repeat for 40 minutes until my girlfriend and I are screaming at each other because this is happening in the middle of a move and then I come and post here :(
 
Other than checking for damaged/malformed splines, I've got nothing else for you. Clean the axle housing splines and examine them closely.
