    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Need new fuel hose, but there is a catch?

My fuel hose has managed to sprout legs and run away from me. I found this out the hard way when I started my bike (nothing happened), then turned the petcock to prime and fuel poured out everywhere :D

Now, as I recall, my fuel hose had a little metal piece on the end that mated with the petcock. Here is the petcock:

Is there any place I can purchase a hose with the proper end to it or do I need to get an entirely new petcock (which probably isn't a bad idea anyway)?

The petcock should have a barbed nipple on the end that the hose slides over. Looks like your petcock came apart, time for a new one.
 
well that solves my problem :)

for the fuel and vent hoses - what inner/outer diameters do i need? i checked BikeCliff's holy bible of GS work, which lists 8mm and 5mm (5/16" and 3/16"), respectively, but are this inner or outer diameters? I just want to make sure I pick up the right hose sizes.
 
Have you tried a piece of brass tubing from a hobby supply store and cut it and flare the end?

Bad idea here Eric, sorry. We are talking about gas here so don't monkey around with ghetto fixes.

The factory fuel line is 7mm ID. Some people use 5/16? automotive fuel line but in my experience it?s a fat hose and you should use a hose clamp since the barb itself is 8mm and there is very little interference. I prefer the stock Suzuki fuel line. If you order some they will send enough for several bikes so it?s not a bad value.
 
OK, I run 3/8" on my scooter...
You will see it if you are going on the Shasta trip. :)
It is not like the bike has a fuel pump, it is gravity fed.
Hasn't leaked in over 28 years. ;)

Z1 sells some 1/4" id fuel tubing that work well. Don't need any clamps with it and it fit's the petcock better that the 5/16" tubing.
 
For what's worth, I use 5/16" fuel line, available from any auto parts store for my fuel line... I also use hose clamps at each end.

I had a petcock that did the same thing as yours, the brass nipple came out of the body (it's pressed in & should stay put!).

Time for a new OEM petcock, about $45.
 
I'm with Eric. It's a motorcycle, not the spaceshuttle (no offense Ed). Whatever works and doesn't leak. You just need to make sure it's a tight and solid fix. I've glued brass tubes into old fuel taps (petcocks) and they work fine.

MacGyver would've used chewing gum and a rubber band.

Remember when the Space Shuttle exploded? Leaking fuel was the cause.

Repairing a petcock with glue is just plain dumb.:eek: Do what you want but I would never suggest such a fix to people that may not understand the risks.

I'm obviously using glue impervious to fuel attack not hobby glue from the local kindergaten. :hand:

Also, other people are responsible for their own actions. If their bikes unsafe it has nothing to do with me. I'm not too worried about a catastrophic spaceshuttle type explosion from a GS either. Even the 'mythbusters' would have a hard time doing that.

Relax man. When you get down off that high horse I'll buy you a beer. :)
 
i'm going with a new petcock. someone here said shortcuts are just longcuts. may as well fix it right the first time and not have to worry about it for another 20+ years :)
