    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Ok...So, I have the air box on, and the wire fixed, all of which is good news.

But, with gas in it and the battery connected, it doesn't start.

That doesn't surprise me, honestly. Not with the condition of the bike when I bought it.

But, I now gotta figure it out.

I think I have the fuel lines hooked up right. That words to read, I THINK. I know the Prime is correct, but I'm not sure about the reserve line. I either have it hooked up right or I have it hooked to the vent. They were hooked up to anything to begin with, but the tank.

Assuming, I hate that word, that everything else is correct, can I throw some gas into the valves under the spark plugs and start it. That makes the assumption that there is no gas in the bike currently, which I believe to be true, since it hasn't run in a long while from what I can tell.

First of all What year/model is your bike? Assuming you have a 4 cylinder GS. Typically on the petcock you only have one fuel line and one vacuum line. The larger of the two is the fuel line which connects between carbs 2 and 3 and the vacuum line connects to the intake port on the engine side of either #2 or #3 carb.
 
'Assuming' you have spark to the plugs, I would guess there's no gas in the bowls. Try this - turn the petcock on prime for about 10 seconds, then remove the spark plugs and turn the engine over for 4-5 seconds. You should smell and even see gas vapor coming out of the spark plug holes.

If you do see/smell vapor, put the plugs back in and try starting it again. If it doesn't start, it's probably electrical. If there is no vapor, there is a fuel blockage of some kind you will need to trace and fix.

Another possibility is the petcock. If the bike runs on the 'prime' setting, but not the 'on' setting, the vacuum switch is not working and needs to be repaired or replaced.

It's an 1982 GS650GLZ. :)

And it's so close to running, I'm trying to figure out how to get the gas to explode. LOL ;)

Keep them coming, I got nothing but time to play with it this weekend. ;)
 
Two things to check: spark and gas. Start with pulling one of the spark plug boots off and putting in a spare plug. Hold the end of the plug against the engine while turning over the engine and looking for spark. Assuming you have spark, check for fuel next by opening the carb float bowl drain screws and looking for fuel. No fuel means you need to focus on the fuel supply line and vacuum line. I usually put a spare piece of line on the petcock vacuum fitting and suck on it to make sure fuel flows. Assuming fuel is flowing, hook everything up and prime the fuel bowls.
