Need to know how to flush a motor

I took the oil an off an 81 gs1100e and there is slug so thick you can pick it up with your fingers. I need to flush this engine. So none of this crap is floating around in the motor. Please help

Clean the pan, re-install it. Put in some cheap 10w-40 oil, run it for a few miles (50-100), change it. if you feel lucky, put in some good oil, run it. If you feel "not-so-lucky", put some more cheap stuff in and run it a few more miles.

Virtually all of the sludge will be in the pan, so cleaning the pan will get most of it out.

.

ok I am just worried because the reason I took the bike apart is a bad noise coming from inside the motor. I took off the pan to check for metal. I will give it a go. Wait how many quarts does this bike hold. It is my first gs1100e and Not real sure. Oh well I will just go by the site glass. thanks

just use fresh oil after cleaning the pan
old oil could have been in there for ages
and oil does breakdown especially with freeze thaw cycles

anyway run it with fresh oil for a quick flush then change and operate at normal temps for extendend perids and the crud should slowly transfer to the oil
change regularly

my engine is clean as a whistle inside for not other reason than this.

I would still like to know how many quarts of oil the manual says to put in the bike.

Did you find any metal? What kind of noise? Sludge is there from not changing oil for a long time, and from using cheap oil. It could have blocked some oil passage and ruined some cam bearing surface or something.

Perhaps your engine cleaning is a bit too late?

A great way to flush an engine is to add some diesel to the oil ( I would estimate about a pint). This tip came from an old friend who used to service tank engines. He said they would add about a gallon of diesel and run it for a while and the internals were as clean as new when stripped.

I've done it a couple of times on old car engines but never tried it on the motorbike (never had to).

I have heard this trick, but I have never tried it. I guess being I am probably going to have to rebuild the motor. I can give it a try! Thanks guys.

Old guys hereabouts add kerosene same idea I guess
takes a crap load of soot out of diesel engine cases

I didn't find any metal in the pan. I found slug thick as jelly. I was given the bike as something to tinker on and I know it has been sitting for years (11 years) to be honest. The motor noise was a rattle/knocking sound, but only at low idle. I took it apart and found the clutch bolt loose and the stator magnet bolt loose too. The starter is making a noise too! When I shut the bike off. Like it spins backward, or something. That was the whole reason I took it apart.

Ok but do I just turn the motor over and over, or do I let the engine run? If I do let it run how long?

gelatinous crap cold just be water and oil all oxidized and such
do not over think this
it ran before it will run with clean oil only as a flushing agent
you will see in a fe miles running how dirty the oil gets

I would not let the engine run
old fellas pour keor into the oil filer let it sit then draint he pan
redneck but the old bastards swear by it

I know that Pennzoil used to have a lot of paraffin in their oil. It would collect in the bottom of the pan in the form of sludge. I won't use Pennzoil to this day due to that. We found almost 2" in the bottom of a 1967 Chevy 350 pan once. Seriously, I'd run Sea Foam through it.

Well I have to reassemble the bike. oil pan, cases covers, carbs, timing chain sensor, tank, then start flushing the motor. I have heard a lot of different things. so I am just going to put a cheaper oil in it. Run the bike for a minute. Then add kerosene crank it over a couple time and drain it. Then refill it with good oil. to see if this helps the noise and cleans up the inside. I will let you guys know how this turns out. Thanks for all your help guys.

You need to run the bike up to operating temp, at least, before dumping the clean up oil.

Thanks I had planned on running it for a couple minutes, but now I will be sure to run it up to temp. Then dump the oil. The only thing that suck is the exhaust someone put on the bike covers the drain plug. So I have to wait for the exhaust to cool down. Then remove the exhaust to drain it. Then fill it back up, and put the exhaust back on. I really am starting to hate this 4to1 someone put on this bike. Thanks gustovh.
