    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Neutral & shifting

'83 GS450L

The bike has no problem shifting through gears when on the move, but when I'm stopped, I can't engage neutral...even with the bike off, and rocking back and forth I can't engage it with my toe...I usually end up just reaching down and yanking up with my hand. It was cold out last night when this happened repeatedly, and it happened to me once before when it was 60 degrees out last week. Is this maybe a clutch adjustment issue? I had just put the bike back together and adjusted the clutch until I had no free play, but I wonder if I need to tighten it further to get full disengagement?
 
my 77 750 is the same way its just touchy to find neutral.. sometimes it goes in easier if i am in 2nd and just tap it slightly down .. Now my 78 750 smooth as silk...every bike has its own little qwirks and it doesnt mean anything is broke or needs adjusting..its just the way they are..
 
Yea I just wasn't sure. I'm just learning more and more about this bike and wondering if there's anything I can do to improve how it currently works. I have an idea how motorcycles in general should work, but not necessarily how GS's work - I understand the two aren't always one in the same ;)

Are you familiar with how to set up the clutch release..on the left side under the small sub cover in the main sprocket cover??
 
You might want to pull the clutch apart and look at the plates and such. If the metal plates are warped it may create drag all the time, not enough to allow the bike to creep forward, but enough to make finding neutral a bitch.
 
all new this winter Ed.. has been this way since i rescued it..I am used to it and it doesnt bug me any..My honda shadow is the same way. Just a bit tricky to find and its very sensitve and easy to pass it by and wind up in 2nd.

Yep...I just put the engine in last week after it was out for a while. The clutch travel seems fine to me...it engages about half way through the travel, just like on any manual car I've driven, and better than the R6 motors we have been using on our FSAE cars

just wondering.. i did my final adjusting yesterday and just to be sure they were hooking up well i did 3 or 4 4,000 rpm hole shots and pulled the front wheel off the ground..Yeah they seem to be hooking up REAL good...LOL
