New, Aftermarket Wiring Looms for Frankenstein Project

Hi Gang,

So I'm getting ready to cobble a bike together from multiple parts (all Suzuki parts) and my main question is this....

Where can I buy an aftermarket (modern) wiring loom that will compliment (fit) an early 80's GS frame, mated up with an early 90's GSXR1100 engine.

I've been told to ask this question in this forum as there are several experts who know where to source this stuff.

I don't have a pre-existing wiring loom to start with and I'm starting this project from scratch with basically nothing.

Of course I need to run a headlight, turn signals, and all the other usual items.

Dream on. Nobody makes such a harness. There are probably a dozen people worldwide doing a swap such as you describe so there is no market for such a part.

When you say ?loom? do you mean wiring harness? Like the bundle of wiring and connectors that runs through and around? Or the actual loom which is the covering for the wires? Either way you?ll hafta make your own on a project like that but possibly these guys could sell you the correct loom material. I have no connection to them but they have a bunch of tech videos about stuff they sell, including wiring looom:

But I'm not looking for a special, customized wiring loom specifically made for what I'm doing. (maybe I misspoke)


What I'm looking for is a more modern wiring loom capable of managing the electrical duties of a late 80's, early 90's GSXR1100 engine while also having the accessory connections that would supply power to the turn signals, headlamp, and brake light.


Maybe all I need is a (new/old stock) wiring loom from one of those bikes I mentioned, and I'd be all set. (I don't know)


I just thought that maybe somebody would have some previous experience with this and be able to give me some pointers on what they did.


I've read countless threads for years in many forums about guys stuffing larger displacement engines into older frames, so this can't be rocket science, and I guarantee you there are more of us out here doing it than just a small handful people.

Yes I mean the entire bundle of wires that would supply power to the the engines electrical items, as well as all the accessory items.

Yes, it has been done numerous times, but most of them have been similar engines and/or frames. :-k

There are several here who know the intricacies of the GSXR engine's needs, but I am not one of them. I do know that Suzuki seldom changed something just because they could, so some 'stuff' is going to be in a similar place, but I would not know enough to suggest that you get the 80s harness or the 90s harness for your application.

It is my understanding that you have no wires at all right now?

I would suggest looking on eBay for either harness. Probably better to start with the 90s version, as it will be more likely to match up with the engine stuff. Anythng that does not mate up (electrically or geographically), you can cut and splice wires to get the connections to where they <will> fit.

IF you had all the proper wire colors (it would make it SO much easier), it would be great to make your own harness, but it helps to have a little bit of experience there. It would help greatly to watch over someone's shoulder while they do it. There are probably several videos on YouTube, so you can probably start there.

I've made up a couple of wiring harnesses from scratch at this point and suggest that you get a used harness or two that's from the 80's gs and cobble one together from them. The wires themselves are almost always in excellent shape after you remove the sheathing/loom and will already contain a lot of the splices that will be handy for you. Cut all of the connectors off and grab a kit from www.vintageconnections.com or www.cycleterminals.com. The latter also sells nice relays, if you need those, as well as sheathing and heat shrink.

For any aftermarket "universal" harness, you're going to have to do a bit of work so, the way I see it, why not do a little more work and be able to say that you made the whole thing . Will be cheaper, too, and you'll have lots extra connectors and wires for the next time you do it.

I'd look for an ignitor and harness that goes with the engine, then strip out the ignition circuit wires and integrate those with your existing GS harness. It's not hard, you just need to tediously trace wires and isolate.
