A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

New air filters?

I can't report on APE pods, since I have never tried them. Like you, I have seen good things about them here. I have K&N's on my bikes, so there is no need for me to test APE filters.

K&N's run $50 a piece. I just find that ridiculous, unless there is an amazing reason why they are priced so high. Durability? Rain/dust resistant?

Consider the APE pods as clones of the K&N pods. If I had make the choice, I would go with the APE pods in a flash.
K&N pods are so expensive because they have a reputation, and people will pay for it. APEs are the new kid on the block, and they did not have to pay the R&D costs that K&N did back when they first started down the path.

I have K&N pods on my GPZ750 and GS1100E, only because they both came equipped with them, so they were "free".

To me, if I were to buy them myself, the choice is pretty clear.

I have K&N pods on my 650. They were on the bike when I bought it. I have a factory-style K&N on the GK that I bought for around $30 several years ago. If I were buying new, I'd go with the APE filters, all other things being equal.

Me too....

K & N's just a little too proud of their stuff now.

I passed on the $65 K&N air filter for my Firebird from O'Reilly's and opted temporarily for the $12 paper one; then I sprung for an SLP intake, and got a blue K&N style filter with it. Can't remember the brand, but it was cheaper.

The only pod filters I have ever used are K&N.

That's what I have on my only bike (not the GS1000) with pods, now, and that's what most folks around here use, other than the APE ones....

Okay, so I have the DJ Stage 3 kit, and now I really need to decide if I'm going with pods or a stock airbox. I found a stock airbox, but it is missing some things, whic will probably total ~$120. My original plan was to go with the APE pods which are ~$75 shipped. So, as far as reliability, driveability, and varying weather conditions go, which should I choose? I'm not concerned about power. I Just want the most reliable option.

Go with the airbox if you want the most reliable option.

That's what I figured. I just don't think the time invested with pods is going to make me happy in the end. I want to be able to ride in a downpour and crosswinds.

k&n also has the warranty. i personally use a k&n in every vehicle i drive. i don't think that either the kz1000m1 or the gs650g will get pods. the only reason i'd go pods is to gain more space under the seat.

So once I re-build my carbs this weekend, can I test them without pods or an airbox on? I would love to hear her start back up, but I might have to wait even more :/ I know in order to tune it I will need the airbox connected, correct?

What would testing it achieve when you know it will not run right until you get it back together properly? If they have compression, fuel and spark, they are capable if running. How about getting all the necessary maintenance and adjustments and parts in place so it will make proper noise when it starts up.

Patience...

I've had to exercise more of that in the last 3 months with my "new" old bike than I've had to in 17 years of riding and 4 other bikes.
