Well I'm back.
Got my bolt kit yesterday from Z-1 for my 81 1100E. (kit 647)
So I lay out the bolts according to length, looks good..
But looking at the number of bolts it is apparent these are in fact just engine bolts and cam cap screws, no engine cover bolts/screws.
And that's good, but I was expecting more I guess.
For $27.00 maybe not.
How do I go about getting the fasteners for the clutch cover, stator cover, etc ?
Is there a seperate kit for those ?
Is there a list somewhere with thread pitch and length?

Thanks again
Angst and mild dissapointment

I would say give Z1 a call on the phone, Im sure they can tell you exactly what they got.

Thanks !
That's a good option, I wonder if anyone sells SS phillips cap screws by the set for the engine covers ?
The set from Z-1 are all phillips cap screws except the cam end cap screws.
I've got Mr Phillips in covers now, buggered up of course.

Call Z-1, yea that's prpbably the way to go, just thought someone here might know of a source.

Thanks

That kit should contain engine cover screws - 64 of them. There should not be any engine bolts. Sounds like you either received the wrong kit or maybe you should take a second look.

I got one for my 1000 and it had all the side cover bolt and the valve cover also. Curious, I've ordered a few things from them and nairy a hickup.

OK, I think I'm stupid but will need a second opinion.
I got all the bolts changed on the valve cover, cam caps, and (cam chain cover, the rectangular on top center of the engine) .

That were all the obvious bolts I could change out.
Now I count the bolts that are left over and I have 27.
I count the bolt/screws to be replaced on the engine covers and lo and behold it looks like a similar number.
I am puzzled though because a few of the bolts are pretty long, around 3.5-4 inches, and two of them are only .5 inches, all the rest somewhere in between give or take.
All I have left seem to be the same OD sooo I guess I start pulling those and match up corresponding lengths.

Sound about right ?

Chain drive cover, should be 3 or so. I had to dig out dirt dobber mud from mine from the p/o.

That would be exactly right. Or you can find the microfiche at match bolts that way. I will be putting my engine back together soon... cross my fingers and pray for patience.... but I remember when I pulled all those bolts out I was in wonderment at how many different sizes when in the left hand cover alone.

The only thing I've ordered from Z1 was the SS bolt kit for my 450 and it actually had a few too many in it so I have a couple of spares.

What I did before using it was to lay them all out in size order, then go through the parts fiche for all the case covers, valve cover, etc.

The part number in the parts fiche tells you the size of the bolt so it's reasonably easy to work it out.

I then put the bolts for a particular cover in a little tin ready to go and that's when I found I had spares as well as everything I needed.

I found it made things very easy when I got to each cover etc.

Okay, so it sounds like the mystery has been solved. Good.

Before installing stainless bolts in the engine it's important to coat the threads with anti-seize lubricant otherwise the bolts can become locked to the aluminum threads.

Thanks to all !
Got everything together and it looks much better and I'm sure will make disasembly less troublesome.

All except that one pesky stripped phillips head on the bottom of the sprocket cover Grrrr.
I'll peck away at it, if need be I'll grind the head off, drill it out and chase the threads or redrill and tap.

Don't grind the head off until you've tried cutting a slot with a dremel (or similar) and tried an impact driver with a slotted bit in it.
