    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Nothing but trouble from easy outs for me. Break one off and then you've really got a drilling project. It's a hard steel but a brittle one. Hence easy breakage and tough to drill.

+1 on the allen head bolts and anti-seize though!
 
Well y'all I think Im gonna have to throw in the towel on doing the bolts myself(I truly believe it will save a ton of time).Im gonna have to take the head off this thing and find a shop to drill out these bolts.Progress is terribly slow and unproductive, with about 3 hours invested in 1 bolt thats not even out. (with 7 to do total).These suckers are pretty hard, I chewed up 2 small titanium drill bits in no time just going slow and being careful. The guys on GSR that own a GS700E seem to think its worth the time and a reasonable amount of money to keep on the road....and I respect that. So Im partially making my decisions based on your words.I want to get this one back on the road in the spring, and without getting these damn bolts out(or if I damage the head doing them myself) it might not happen. I dont own a drill press and I think its awefully optimistic that I can freehand 7 bolts out without snapping a drill bit off in one or damaging the head and causing an even better headache.

What will I have to do to remove the head? I did search the forum for a walk through where maybe someone else was rebuilding a motor and had it on here but I didnt find much...Also, what maintainance should I do while I have it apart, and what will I need to reassemble things properly?
 
Haven't dug in that far myself, but I bet you can find lots of head removal advice in the archives.

Just a thought: might be easier/cheaper to check eBay for a non-fubar'd head.

The 700 is indeed an excellent machine. But then again there are lots of excellent machines. Do whatever is most time/money/enjoyment effective. ;-)
 
If I am able to locate another cylinder head what should I expect o pay for it?.....of course thats assuming it can be found relatively local..if not of course I will have to add the shipping costs
 
Well...............shes back!!...The gs700e I was given turned out to be trouble at first, but now its tuned and running absolutely perfect. I REALLY lucked out and found a good mechanic that worked from home and was only 20 minutes away.At first I just asked for him to fix my header bolt issue, but after dealing with him for that I had him do much more. I will make a list of the work he did for me...I cant imagine having it done at a shop and getting the price I got from him...I was very pleased...

Engine-

Remove engine to repair broken exhaust header bolts
Drill and rethread 7 broken header bolts
Remove previously broken extractor from 1 snapped bolt(I SWEAR this was the PO...I read the threads and didnt even try that route guys..lol)
Reinstall engine,exhaust system and route wires
Charge battery

Carburetors-

Remove float bowls and inspect carburetors-emulsion tubes and various parts dirty
Disassemble,soak,and clean carburetor bodies, and all parts
Reassemble carbs, adjust float heights, and install
Reseal and install K&N air filter
Synchronize carbs,adjust pilot screws using gas analyzer
Test warm restart
Bike backfired and wouldnt restart(he mentioned finding low compression in 3 cyl. at this time)
Remove valve cover and inspect valve clearance
Several valves tight-adjust to properclearance,reinstall valve cover
Pressure lube coke and throttle cables

Front brakes and Rear brakes-

Remove and inspect sticky brake calipers and inspect
Free stuck parts and clean corrossion from calipers,pads,and pistons
Lube caliper pistons and pins
Clean muck from front brake master cylinder,clean front brake rotor
Change front brake fluid and purge air from the system
Change rear brake fluid and purge air from the system
Adjust chain

What do you all figure that would have run me in a shop? At about $75.00 per hour im guessing it wouldnt have been a pretty number

Still to come-Next week Im gonna buy new tires and brake pads, then all I need is new blinkers(aftermarket most likely, and new horns cause the old ones are shot.
