As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

New handlebars - clutch lever/mirror won't stay put

Howdy folks.

So I put some Clubman or Superbike bars from bikebandit on my 81 GS650GL. The mounts for the mirrors and clutch/brake levers are a little bit big for the handlebars. Tighten as I might, the clamp wouldn't get small enough.

So... I wrapped a couple-five layers of masking tape around the bars, and the throttle and brake levers have been fine. The clutch/mirror mount, on the other hand, is not staying put. It's rotating under pressure from the wind on the mirror and its mount.

So... the masking tape wasn't a great idea. Well, maybe it wasn't bad. My next thought was a layer of sandpaper, grit against the bars, wrapped in either masking or electrical tape, but both seem kind of impermanent.

Anyone have suggestions?

Something a bit more solid would be better - like some aluminium can cut into strips to use as shim material. You might need to pry the clamp open a little to get it over the shim.

Send them back to Bike Bandit as defective and get some different ones. They are obviously not the right diameter. The are probably not going to stay tight in the mount either. What brand bars are they?

Those cheapo bars with no serrations where they mount to the steering head?

Them's the ones. They're tight so far in all the clamps except the one for the mirror. I did put some tape around the brake/throttle one too, but it's not moved at all.
I can't find a record of my bikebandit order, but I've still got another set of bars in the box that I meant to return.

Edit: The brand is bikemaster.

Beware of the tape when the sun is out and it gets hot.
The adhesive will be more like a lube until they cool again.
