I did the carb rebuild on my GS650 just like the pictures in the forum showed but I have a question. What are these little guys for? There wasn't a picture of them in the step by step pictorial which by the way was invalueable. I'm guessing they weren't in the rebuild kit just to keep the other parts company:D

I am not totally positive....but they look like the block off (tamper proof) caps for the mixture screws. I would leave them off personally.

They are the little "pucks" that go above the bowl gasket. You should have them in there, sorry. Did you already install the carbs?

If they have little tiny holes in them and the sides are straight up and down, they are replacement tamper-proof caps for the mixture screws.

If they are solid discs and the sides are slightly tapered, they go above the float bowl gasket and are held in with a square-section o-ring and the bowl gasket.

.

They're straight with holes in them. I guess they are the tamper proof things. The carbs aren't installed yet. That's tomorrow, Whee.

I wouldn't guess about this one. It's easy to pull off a bowl and check.

The plugs in the float bowls are normally black rubber from my experience. I've never seen silver covers before from carbs here in the UK.

On the couple sets of carbs I have done on the 650's the plugs in the bowls have always been black rubber like Suzuki Mad stated. I would still bet they are the mixture caps. If the carbs are off just pull one bowl cover and verify that you have the black rubber cone looking thing in the main body that are actually held in place by the by the bowl cover.

The black rubber cone shaped stopper goes in the pilot jet hole. When I dipped my carbs one of the metal plugs fell out and I lost it. Had to get a replacement off of a member of the forum.

The metal plugs goes where the red arrow is in my picture..the black rubber cone shaped stopper goes where the pencil lead is in my picture. That's how it is on my bike anyway. Might be different on his.

errorcauser, please fix your photo link you posted, all I can see is a red x in a box.

I dont remember ever seeing anything like that in the ones that I have messed with but they have both been BS32's off of 650's.

Oh, I see it now, I did not know those things could be removed. Mine stayed in place when I did mine and the rebuild kits didnt come with new ones...so yay. So what is under those things? Is it just one of the machining holes when the made the carbs that they sealed off?

I still vote that it came with the rebuild kits......its mixture screw caps.

Yep, just a big ole machined hole into the throat of the carb. I'd say, seeing as how he said they came in a kit, that they are the plugs to make the screws tamper proof...again. :)

Just pointing these plugs out so that he can make sure. Kind a shocked me when one of mine fell out and i lost it.

Your fine with out putting them in they are the tamper proof plugs for the mixture screws so they are not needed.

Did you buy the O-rings from www.cycle0rings.com?

if not you are going to have to tear down your carbs again.....:( un less you like to.......:D any who also make sure the rebuild kits came with the correct jets for your bike here is a place to find the correct sizes.
http://www.thegsresources.com/_forum/showthread.php?t=73723
just to double check that you didnt get different sized jets.

Good luck
Jake

Well I'm definately not a carb expert and I did everything the step by step photo set said to do. Everything went back together and I put them on the bike and it won't start. But it is the same issue the bike had before. I don't know if it's the carbs however they were pretty dirty when I pulled them and rebuilt them. I have always had a problem with ignition problems on cars, bikes or boats so I'm going to take it to a mechanic and have him go over the entire bike with a fine tooth comb. I have to have this thing be dependable for my wife, starting issues are unacceptable. Unless there is a member around the Oklahoma City area who can help I'm going to take her to a mechanic this week.

Yep, those are the covers for the idle air mixture screws..I have these in a box or bag.....somewhere. No need for them

What other issues are you having ? How many miles did you say ? The mechanic is going to charge a fortune, if you can find one to work on it.
If the carbs are clean, the valves adjusted and you have spark. It should start up.

Well there are a couple of places that will work on the older stuff around here. The bike has 30000 miles and I don't know the entire history of the bike. The PO said he was the second owner but the titles in OK tell the tale. For instance the last letter on my Goldwing title is a C which means I'm the 3rd owner. The GS title is a F meaning either he lost the title 5 times or he's the 6th owner. I've just about had a snoot full of people lying to me and I don't believe a word he said. So I'm assuming the bike has been rode hard and put away wet. I'm looking at making $1000 the cut off for maintenance on the bike and if it can't be done under that then throwing in the towel.
