new member in need of help

hi everyone new member here in need of guidence. i recently was givin a gs750L or at least thats wat the ferrings say. well anyways heres my problem the vin classifies the bike as a gs750tz???? but the bike has a single caliper on the front rim and drums in the back but it also has mag rims so after hours of researche i have found no models with this set up... frankienstiene bike. the bike will run very nice when i push star it and i really would like to restore this bike and since its my first it seems like a good starting point to began this journey. so if any one can help me out with figuring out whats going on i would very much apreciate it

I don't believe so. Only the 8-valve 750's up to 1979 had the kickstart and the cases are different for the 16 valve models like you've got.

Probably not. The engine is different and there's no place to actually mount the kick start. You're much better off finding out why it won't start. You might just put in a new battery and be good. If that doesn't solve your issue then start looking for electrical connections that have corroded and clean them up.

Pull in the clutch and see if it starts w/out push starting it.

my bike has a clutch safety so it wont even attempt to turn over unless the clutch is in. well anyways i have already made sure that nothing is siezed and i have already ridden the bike with the help of a push start. i just pulled the starter off and it spins but im not sure if the gear should extend. i bypassed the starter solenoind before i pulled the starter and the bike still wouldnt turn over and yes the battery is good. i guess my next question is whether or not the gear the starter spins can get jammed up???

First thing is first...welcome

Second even if the starter turns out of the bike does not mean it is in good shape. The brushes or whatever can be gone...you can open it and clean it out and replace those if you want or just get a refirb from stockers...your choice..nothing pops out of the starter... this is not a automobile starter.

Third, have you tested the charging system after you bump started it right? Electrical Gremlins common...and check all your grounds *obvious* I know...

Forth, fuses, if you do not have blade type even if they look fine best replace them with new... they are cheap enough.

Fifth, Recheck your connections with a voltmeter to make sure everything is really attached... some folks have opened up and cleaed the contacts on their controls and found that helps with touchy connections.. my kill switch on starts does that sometimes...bike stays running fine just that kill switch is touchy when I have to engage the starter.

The kickstarts went away on the GS bikes in 1980. 1979 was the last year for a kick starter. Since you're having electrical issues (remember that most bikes won't start without the clutch pulled in, some have to be in neutral), start with a good battery and go through the Stator Papers. A bad starter clutch would still spin the starter and not spin the motor.
The only thing keeping the starter from turning would be the solenoid and it sounds like you jumped that so you have something wired wrong.
Positive cable straight to the solenoid/other side of solenoid to the starter. If you were to touch these two wires it would be a direct link to the battery. Is the starter bolted down so it's grounded?

just wanted to say thanks for all the help i fugured out the issue. even though the starter was spinning out of the motor i took the starter apart and found out that the brushes were bad. found a set of brushes that would work after about an hour of digging at the local parts house. i put everything back together and shes running like a dream... and wow i didnt think it would be as quick of a bike as it is.
