All new forum registrations must be activated via email before you have full access to the forum.

A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

i would like to say hello and that this forum has some of the best spokesmen for a ride they like, i bought a '79 gs550e for my son, searched the internet and found this wonderful place! i have had a few questions and got good answers without asking(basscliff's sight-awesome!). anyway my post is to say that this is a great bike, for a first bike he's taken to it real well, it rides easy and handles well stock. I'm worried -as a parent- about the brakes as they take a lot of grip(I've got power abs) for a quick stop, but even with the stock tires he's able to handle the curves great and it has great pick-up even though i still need to go through the carbs. i have a BMW (yea it's a sport touring bike) with the bells & whistles but,I'll keep his gs if/when he decides to move up/along to some thing else as i like to ride it and it's just a plan fun bike, we took his first real ride yesterday through the some great twisties for more than 140 miles and he loved it. i will be asking questions as time goes by for different things as we all do, and I'll be asking some real smart people here. so this is just my 2 cents for the gs enthusiasts on this site, well deserved props to a great bike.

Welcome Joel,

The 550E as you know is a great starter bike. And yes we like Beamers here :D.
I think it's very special for a son to start learning how to ride with dad right behind him. These first moments I'm sure will be cherrish forever.
Make sure he's in the loop when you start wrenching the carbs, he'll appreciate the bike even more.
I'm not convinced who between you two will start looking for a second GS though ;)

Ride safe!

the 550E is NOT only a starter bike!:D

this will be forever parked in my garage........if for no other reason than the fact that it has more money invested in it than ANY other bike I've ever owned!!:D
