A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

looking for the best place to get a new starter for a 81 850L , At the best price . Had mine rebuilt this past spring but they said it wouldn't last long :? Its getting slow when the motors warm , let it sit & cool down it will crank , Batt & charging system checks out OK all new cables , wires & relay. Thanks

I would prefer a new or reman. One from ebay is a 50/50 shot that its good or in a good rebuildable state :( are new ones no longer available :?: Thanks

I guess I'm a little bit of a skeptic, though. There's no Bendix in these starters, it's just a DC motor with an armature and some brushes....How many miles are on it?

Who rebuilt it, the Suzuki shop, or a real electric motor rebuilder? If it was the Suzuki shop, maybe they're just trying to sell you a new starter.

I've had mine apart, it's simple to take apart, I cleaned the commutator with some contact cleaner, the brushes looked fine, stuck it back together and it cranks great. I think Bikebandit sells the armature and brushes, if the commutator is worn too much maybe just replacing the armature and brushes would be a lot cheaper than a whole new starter.

EDIT: I just checked, Bikebandit sells the brushes for $10 but they no longer list the armature. Still, unless it's really really shot, I would try cleaning it. The contacts on the commutator should be nice and shiny and free of grease or oil. Not even WD 40 here. Even if windings have gotten messed up, a motor shop can rewind it cheaper than a new starter. They can even fix worn commutator bars.

The bike only has 23.000 miles on it , But it had sat out side uncovered for 16 years :( The starter was a clump of rust from sitting in water, ( Drain plugged up ) The shop that redone it is a starter alternator shop, thats all they do is rebuild starters , generators, alternators, & electric motors, I have been using them for many years with out any problems,

Argggh, sitting outside uncovered for years....that's a bummer. I was hoping you wouldn't have to spend almost $400 but if it looks like a new starter may ne necessary...that sucks.

I guess you could chance buying a used one, clean it and stick brushes in it...and hope you didn't wind up with another pile of rust.
