If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

Hello All! First time post but many months of stalking the site! I picked up a 1982 GS750e for $250 with a clean title as a project bike for my kids and myself. Was told the bike ran before the po started to break it down. Its missing the headlight and the exhaust. Right now it is driveway under a tarp and getting all the nuts and bolts sprayed with PB Blaster every couple of days. The plan is to break it down, bring it down to my cellar and work on through the winter with the kids. Before I do this i was planning on hooking up a battery to check and see if everything lights up.
My questions are:

Should I try to start it before i breakdown the bike?

I`ve read that 1000 &1100 exaust will fit, will older 750`s also fit? Has anyone tried using other manufacturers exhaust? Will anything newer fit ?

Thanks for letting me in!

Welcome. I'd check to see whether the motor turns freely, what condition the oil is in, and certainly get an exhaust system before trying to start it-at the bare minimum.

I'm with pilot. Who knows how far that breakdown went and what state the motor was left in. Last thing you need right now is to find out the valve timing is off. At the very least turn it over by hand before trying to fire it up.
Welcome btw and in case you haven't yet found it http://members.dslextreme.com/users/bikecliff/

When I started working on mine I filled up the crankcase with oil and poured oil down the spark plug holes and let it sit for a winter while doing other things. Pulled the plugs out and cranked it over manually first. A few spurts of oil came out of the plug holes but all was well. Changed the oil several times the first summer that I had it running as it was dirty after the first 100 Km. As for the exhaust, do you have the headers? A scrap metal dealer stole mine off my back deck early one morning and I went to a MC.. junkyard and found an exhaust system but the pipes were shot. Cut the pipes off, welded a sleeve onto the headers and bought 2 Mac slip on mufflers. They came with a sliding mounting bracket and I had to McGuiver it a bit to fit but it looks original. Exhausts are hard to find for these old bikes and if you do find one it will be expensive. The slip ons were $49 each Cdn. and the junkyard stuff cost $70. plus another hundred for the welding. Good luck and welcome to GSR.

Unfortunately no headers! Found a few exhaust systems on ebay but each has its own issues. Found a 79 750 exhaust, 4 to 1 system. Would this work? Also found just the 4 head pipes.

Welcome,

I'm a fan of 750s and I have an 82/750T with a V&H/4-1 pipe I got from Z1Enterprises.

You're right in saying the 1000/1100s pipe set up will work on a 750. Just make certain before you make the purchase.

Oh, BTW....we love pictures! Let's see your bike!

On Bikecliffs website find the CV (BS) carb rebuild tutorials and a service manual for the 16 valve engine and get after it.

Cal,

Welcome to GSR.

Maybe power up to check out electrical things.

ANd maybe turn over on starter to get compression test.

Most folks will say not to start and run it without an exhaust system, something about can be bad for the exhaust valves.

.

I am quite certain that a 1000 header will NOT fit any 16 valve engine. Though I have not tried it myself, I think the 16valve engines have different port spacing than the 8 valve... I would be DAM sure of fitment before spending that kind of money site unseen... Good luck.

Where are you located? Maybe there is someone near enough to you that has one?

I found a complete exhaust on ebay, not perfect but sill make due! I'm in Rotterdam, NY which is 20 minutes west of Albany.
