First of all ill introduce myself. I am a soldier in the Army and am stationed at Ft. Sill in Oklahoma.

I recently purchased a 1981 GS550T for about 600 dollars because I desparately have been wanting a motorcycle so i figured this would be a good starter bike.

The bike has been sitting for awhile but started and ran however it did the "gs popping" sound at idle and steady throttle. I took it to the stealership and got it running right. At least it did for a day. It started to lose power and die when i would come to a stop if i let off the throttle. Also the plugs are fouling every day or so which i believe is becuse they poured some engine cleaner called "Ring Free" in the tank. I beleive it is like Seafoam but much stouter.

So i figured i would pull the Carbs off and clean them out. When i put them back on, i messed up somewhere because it doesnt seem like it lined up on the air intake as well as it should and now when it starts there is a leak from the valves on the carb rail (and by leak, it is like a waterfall) i do not know if this is because when i tried to start it after putting the carbs back on i used the Prime setting. Unfortunately before i got a chance to troubleshoot i must have jacked some wiring or something up beacuse now when i turn the key i get nothing. no lights, no start no nothing. i have checked all fuses and the battery is good and i really would like some guidance if it is not too much to ask because i am tired of taking the wife;s vehicle to work.

Thanks for any help and time that is given.

Welcome and thank you for your service!

Did you change the O rings on the Carb Boots? That will fix a lot of problems quickly.

Check the wiring from the ignition switch to the main harness...sounds like a simple connection problem there.

Pull the carbs off and put them back on again to make sure they're aligned correctly.

Next time you try to start it, put it on prime for maybe 30 seconds and the turn it back to run. That should put enough fuel in there to get it started. I personally have only used prime on bikes that I'm waking up from a deep sleep. Usually a couple twists of the throttle before I push the start button are enough to get the bike started for me.

When starting any GS pull the choke on and don't touch the twist grip until the engine warms up a bit and the choke is turned off. Opening the throttle upsets the choking system. It is designed to work with the carb slides in the down position, when you raise the slides through using the twist grip you alter the vacuum flow under the slides and the motor usually cuts out.

Payne,
Welcome to GSR.

You refering to the intake boots on the engine or the intake boots on the air box? The ones on engine would probably not have been taken off to remove carbs, but if they were, they can be put back in wrong place (inside two different from outside two) or wrong directions (upside down). IF they were installed wrong then carb would not line up at all. THe intakes on the air box also wouln not need to be removed from the airbox, but if they were, are all the same as each other and are symetrical, so I dont think there could be a problem there.

Please describe your leak better? Leaking from where?
Putting petcock on PRIme is not a problem, just dont leave it there for hours and days.

You have a volt meter? Would be best to have one to trouble shoot this problem (and might have other need for one someother time anyway).

.

redman, it is leaking from the nipple-like valves that are inbetween the first and second and third and fourth carbs. i am out of town right now but i will start to pull the bike apart later this week once time allows me to.

all help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Those would be where a vent hose would normally be attached. I don't know enough to know how they would be causing problems for you, though...

appreciate the help. it looks like Uncle Sam is going to give us some time off this weekend so I will start pulling it apart then after I put a transmission in the 77 Monte Carlo! Thanks for all input, it is greatly appreciated.
