    A note to new registrants...
All new forum registrations must be activated via email before you have full access to the forum.

A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Hello my name is Adam and I'm knew to the forum. I just traded my 73 Chevy Truck for a 80 GS1000 L. This is my first bike so I am learning. I know my way around autos pretty well so the bike seems a bit similar in some aspects. The bike overall seems to be in good shape. It sat for nine years so there is definitely some maintenance to be done. It starts but only runs on choke so I'm going to go through the carb. Probably gummed up. There is a slight oil leak seems like its coming from oil pan right behind headers. My main concern is the trans. The bike wont run but when I put it in nuetral I can feel it when I bump into first. But all the gears after first just dont feel like they engage. I dont feel the click that I feel when I bump into first. Is this normal or do I have a problem? Look forward to hearing from you guys. This site seems like a great resource. Thanks Adam

Welcome to the forum. In reality, you'll need the bike running to shift between all of the gears so don't worry about that yet. Take your carbs completely off and strip them down. Soak each carb body and the jets (NO RUBBER PIECES) in a can of Berryman's carb cleaner for 24 hours each NO SHORTCUTS. Get new orings from www.cycleorings.com since the owner is a member here and really looks out for us.

Basscliff will be along later to give you the official welcome that includes a laundry list of maintenance things. Trust that list and you'll be happy with your bike for awhile to come.

A couple of other tips...put your location in your profile in case someone is close to you to help and throw your bike info in your signature so you aren't asked a million times later on.

Again, welcome.

Hi Mr. gs1000emt,

Yeah, you really should be rolling in order to shift through all the gears. It sounds like you're going to have to roll up your sleeves and give your bike some TLC. Let's get started.
