A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

So it needs a tune up and side cover paint. '83 11e? $400?!?! Running?!?!

Total steal!

A redneck in a pickup truck (yeah, NYC has a few) pulled up next to me on the parkway, leaned out his window and shouted, "You got the best bike ever! You got the gold! That's the best bike ever built!"

He obviously mistook my '82 for an '83. But that's alright - he was drunk. :xsmilie_mrgreen:

Before I put all this back together one more question. I cant seem to find anything on the valve adjusting guide referring to how the pistons are numbered. Was I safe to assume they are numbered 1-4 going left side of bike to right? It seemed correct when I set it to tdc the correct valves were closed. The same when I rotated the engine. Thanks for the help fellas it wasn't as bad as I suspected!

Nice bike as others have mentioned that bike needs rfjetting as the down tubes show. Zdid you look at the mains to see if there was a DJ kit installed?

Absolutely! You will definitely need to do some plug chops to see where your carbs are at. Did you talk to Steve? He has all the proper tools, and knowledge to get that thing running like a new bike. Once you get it running like it SHOULD run, it will scare the $hit out of you!

Seriously though, Go get some brats, beer, and fire up the grill. If you grill it, Steve will come...

Steve Im sending up the bat signal! If you could find it in your heart to help a brutha out I would be forever in your debt. If its Beer and Brats I've got you covered. I have completely rebuilt the carbs, dipped and new "o"rings and bolts. I have adjusted the valves per the spec sheet on here. It will run and idle but totally lacks power when you ride it. It feels as if its missing. kinda shudders through the gears and you always feel like you need to downshift to keep up the speed. I did notice the po put a dyna s ignition on it. Although he is still running the orig. coils. I know on my KZ I had to run green coils with my Dyna ignition. Could this be a problem? This weekend replace the plugs and wires and I will check the timing because the temp gets really high (Could be a faulty gauge Dash is kinda weird electronically) I really cant think of what else it could be The bike will easily attain 60mph on my back roads and it rides and handles great..if only it ran like that too!

gwad19709,
What part of Cincinnati are you located?
I'm on the west side.
If Steve makes a house call this weekend, let me know, I'd love to pop over lend a hand, or at least an opinion or two and say howdy (or HUDY in localease)
Cheers !

I live in Montfort Heights/Cheviot next to the new hospital on Northbend rd. I had no idea there were others out there like me! LOL!

We're practically neighbors. I'm near Werk Rd.
I pass that hospital 20 times a week.
I had a similar condition with my GS.
I sourced some new intake O-rings and boots, made a few small carb adjustments and the issue vanished.
Sounds like you're close to getting it sorted.
I rode up to Steve's place and he synched my carbs and it's been smooth sailing since.
Perhaps we can get your bike in shape enough to do likewise. I've yet to see Steve's new GS workshop.
Oh and congrats on the GS Score !~

Stop by anytime brother! I live on Crestnoll just past Reemelin First big brown house on the left. I'm usually out front tinkering on something most evenings. I've been building old honda z50's lately they are so much fun!

Update* It seems the advice and help you guys have given me paid off I was able to successfully rebuild my carbs and adjust the valves. I listened to Spyder about calling up Steve. He responded right away and made the trip down from Dayton with his wife. As it turns out I suppose I was over thinking a few things. I didn't check the firing order ASSUMING it was a bigger problem. Felt a bit foolish on that one. Also I had never dealt with a vacuum petcock...never even heard of one before. Who would've thought you had to hook that little black hose Up? After a carb sync and a few tweeks he had the motor singing a much more palatable song! I am in your debt my friend I truly appreciate the help you gave and I find it very commendable the time you give to fellow riders through your amazing GS whisperer skills! Very nice couple your welcome at my place anytime! I have a few little things to work out.. new petcock, tank vibration rubber, front fork rebuild and then a new paint job. Then I will have a real Gem! Thanks Again Steve you the man!!!!!

That's awesome! Steve--you're a great friend/resource for those fortunate to live near you.

And of course, welcome Mike. Very nice find and the price was totally a steal. Especially after hearing the features this bike has. Enjoy!
