    A note to new registrants...
All new forum registrations must be activated via email before you have full access to the forum.

A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Just got a 1981 GS 850 G ( I think the g is right, it might be GL...). Anyway, I stumbled upon the sight here and think you guys sewem to know what you are doing and wanted to introduce myself. I am in Virginia and this is my first motorcycle so I am pretty excited. It does not run right now but with some work ()and maybe some help from this forum) I hope to get it running and mechanically sound by the spring. Anyway, just introducing myself, and thanks for the cool site.

Don't assume these guys know what they are talking about, just that they are talking!

Kidding. Between eveyone on this site, we know more about these bikes than the engineers that designed them!

do yourself a favour and spend the money to track down and buy a chilton or haynes manual they are worth their weight in gold if you are a backyard mechanic... good luck and keep the rubber side down!!!!!

Good to have you here. Give a yell when you need tech help. Uhhhh, notice I didnt say IF. LOL eh eh eh Go ahead and get a Clymer or Haynes book for the bike. It will be a big help.

I have a manual for my 850 Can't read it but it has great pictures
OH it's printed in French 8O
Cool bike, Start by replacing all of the fluids
engine oil & Filter
Secondary gear oil-- Beveled gears 80-90 wt gear oil
Rear differential oil 80-90 wt gear oil
Brake fluid front & rear / with a good flush
New battery
Clean the carbs--- Check http://www.cycleorings.com/ ?? for a set of O rings for the carbs. While the carbs are off. Replace the O rings on the intake manifold adapters too!
NOTE- it is very important that the air box/ filter be installed and sealed (No air leaks) or it will not run correctly

That should keep you busy for quite some time

Thanks

Thanks

Thanks for the responses. I am sure that I will be posting WHEN , not if, I have some problems. I ordered a manual yesterday so when it gets here........ away we go. Thanks again for the warm welcome.

Blake,
Where in VA are you located? I live in Blacksburg for school, and outside Harrisonburg the rest of the time. These bikes are alot of fun, cheap to run but do have the little idiocincrocies (sp?) to you will need to take cre of just because of how old the bike is.

Hey Wes

Hey Wes

Wes,
I live in Staunton. Pretty close to old Harrisonburg.
