    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Just ordered a set of piston rings, a gasket set and a MAC four onto two exhaust system (turn outs). It should all get here next week, then I have the makings of a nice little project. Can't wait to experience what difference those touch-ups will make to the old GS650. As it is now, it's kicking some oil from the #1 cyl and oil fouling the plug. #2 is down in compression too, but the bike's not smoking and still makes very good power. Will report on the upgrades when done.
 
How much did those piston rings set you back?

I've been thinking about doing the same to my gs550/650
 
Here's the Update:
Ok the rebuild job should have taken 5-days, the bike ended up in the shop for 18-days (lots of stuff going on there Shadows, Vulcans, Quads, SeeDoos), but I believe he took his time and did a great job on my bike, keeping me informed to the max.
So ....a set of piston rings, a gasket set, timing chain, chain-guide, shims, filter , oil, plugs and a MAC four onto two exhaust system (turn outs). My mechanic believes in hand-lapping the valve seats (there are opinions for and against that), he did mine.
Got the bike back today and she pulls fine and feels great. I'll be taking it easy (relatively) for the next 500-miles to break-in (again controversial opinions on this).
The MAC Exhaust looks great on the bike, is quieter and has a more high pitched sound compared to the "raucous bark" of my homebrew straight-through resonators. The shop owner advised that the 4 into 1 system would have yielded a deeper bark, but I really like the esthetics of the ones I have. Nonetheless, the MAC 4 into 2 provides the much needed back-pressure. I no longer have any popping/backfiring when decelerating.
The only problem found with the MAC is that the joint between the header and the baffle leaves much to be desired, no matter how tight one tightens the clamp bolt. I may place a heat-resistant shim in there, but for the time being it was assembled with some red-silicone and that helps quite a bit.
One other thing that's new on the bike is the bank of carbs. I bought the carbs off of Andrew Long (one of our members here) they are in excellent condition and work flawlessly. No sooner I took mine off the shop offered to buy the old ones off of me, so I obliged.
So, I'm a happy camper. My baby's back in the garage and I can go on fussing and bragging over her. :lol: :lol: :lol:

Labor was like US$250.00 (including shims), OEM Rings, timing chain and Athena Gasket kit don't really recall prices now purposely lost the bills, destroying all evidence), but were from either Bike Bandit or Alpha-Sports.

man i wish i could find a mechanic that would do that sort of job for that sort of money over here....HA! yeah right
