I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

No airbox lid

I just realized that my '82 GS1100e, bought 3 months and 500 miles ago, does not have a cover on it's airbox. It has a V & H header and megaphone (that could use repacking) but it seems to start and run near perfect. While it's warming up, there's some 'popping' out the exhaust, also during engine braking. She pulls great - redlines the first three gears (haven't tried it in fourth and fifth yet). As far as I know, the carbs and intake are stock. Once warm, she idles nicely at about 1400 rpm.

I'm certainly going to order the lid. I want to have as many original, stock parts as possible, even if I'm not using them now. I'm just wondering about the effects of putting the lid on. I've experienced both possibilities:

When I put four K&N air filters on my Z1, or removed the entire air cleaner from my '68 327 Camaro before a race, I noticed no effects. Yet when I removed the lid from the air cleaner of my '82 Z28, the car barely made it around the block.

It makes a very small change in mixture at the higher RPM and bigger throttle opening. To test, just block the opening off by taping on some cardboard or something and you can see the difference.

Mine went just a hair too lean with it off. Still ran fine but not quite right.

I have one you can have just pay shipping if you want , brian

When I got my 82 GS550L it had an old stock filter & no lid.

Got a new K&N filter that goes in the stock air box.
After doing some research on this forum, I also got a new stock filter & a used lid.

After the carbs were rebuilt we tried 4 combos:
1) K&N filter
2) K&N filter with lid
3) new stock filter
4) new stock filter with lid

Definitely runs the best with the new stock filter & lid.

Also, many thanks are owed to this forum.
Don't know if I would have ever got the GS550L to right correctly without this forum.

My guess would be you are a little lean with the popping. No air box lid, stock jetting and a pipe. You could probably change the jets , go up a couple sizes and not worry about the lid. I run my 1000 with out the lid , and a K&N filter , custom duel pipes and up 6 jet sizes, but it runs well.

If you did no re-jetting, that is no surprise at all.

If you had added one or two main jet sizes to scenarios 1 through 3, you might have found that it ran a bit better than stock.

Part of the popping could be cold air getting into the pipe. How tight is the connection between the megaphone and collector. That is where the leak usually is. Mine was popping as well when letting off the throttle. I took an exhaust pipe expander to the collector to get a tighter fit. Seemed to work pretty good.

This is the combination for my set up. RC pipe (looks just like the VH pipe) K&N filter+lid and 2.5 steps up on the main jets.
