I'm new to fuel delivery...
So this is a rookie question, like most of mine.

Just did a valve lash on the 1100. This was the first time I had actually disconnected the tank (had only moved it back/up before).

Got everything put back together, and I'm 99% confident it went back together correctly. Now it won't fire.

Ran beautifully before.

Yes, I have the dreaded 1980 petcock.

Yes, I tried prime.

Should I just wait for some fuel to flow on prime?

HELP!!! 1400 mile trip in 6 days...:(

You have to suck on the vacuum line to start the prime flowing. Once itstarts it will flow forever.

Is yout timing 180 out or somethng like that? Wires going to the wrong plugs?

I don't know. Could that happen during a by-the-book valve adjustment?

I spun the crank on the right side of the bike (rider's view). Only spun it enough to align cam notches as necessary.

From my work on old crappy cars, it does smell like a timing issue.

It's crazy. I just replaced the valve cover gasket a month or so back - basically the same procedure, except the valve adjustment. I followed the procedure on Basscliff's site to the letter (I think).

Bike started instantly and ran great before - was only adjusting the valves because everyone says to do it.

Ugh.

Someone else said maybe it was flooded. So I pulled the plugs. #1 & #2 were soaked - #3 & #4 less so. Torched the gas off, and turned the engine over 25 times or so without the tank hooked up.

Waited 15 minutes or so, put it back together, and same result. 1&2 wet, 3&4 pretty dry.

(yes, I checked spark)

Can spinning the crank to line up the cam notches screw up the timing?

check fire...don't catch on fire if fuel is around.
and no to the above question you asked.
it is easy to pull harness/coil feed wires loose..lose the orange/white connection and you have no spark.
when dragging the VC out things can move around or come loose.
hopefully you rally cranked down those little nuts...they take some force to not come loose after a few miles.

ok just seen you added that you checked spark...on all 4 i assume?
did you remove you plugs to adjust your valves?
i ask because you can damage the advancer when turning the 19mm nut if there is much force involved.
if damaged this could have your timing off.
just a thought...

I did not remove plugs to turn crank. I didn't meet much resistance.

So what's the fix for what I could've done?

Pull the signal gen cover off and check the cam timing.
Measure the secondary resistance on both coils from plug cap to plug cap.

Might be able to make it to your place either Thursday or Friday evening if need be.

Dale,

I appreciate the offer a great deal. I'm out of my pay grade here big time.

Here's a thought - is it possible my process on the valves was bad and I over-cranked (and thereby slightly opened) them? I tightened the adjustment screws down to my feeler gauge and then yanked the gauge out.

Maybe I should go the other direction and loosen them till the gauge goes in?

After the nut has been tightened, the guage should still slide smoothly, with just a slight bit of drag.

Anything is possible. If you are unsure with your adjustment procedure, just go back over what you had done and double check everything.
