Bike: 81 GS850g-chop/bob/ratbike/whatever...

Hello. I am just finishing my gs 850 chopper and I have a few problems. First off the bike will start and run but only on the number 1 cylinder. All the barbs are getting fuel to the float bowl just not into the cylinder. The bike will run nicley on starting fluid on all cylinders. also my new tank does noit have the vacuum port on the petcock so how should I go about taking care of that. Do I need the vacuum from the carb to the tank?

Need a pic of the petcock. Aftermarket? Broken stock?

The fuel is not getting past the float needle and seat or your jets and ports are clogged with old gas.
Or you petcock is toast?

The vacuum is from the carbs to the petcock, do you have the hoses hooked up correctly?

I only have the fuel feeed hooked up because the petcock on the new tan only has 1 port for fuel no vacuum. I cleaned them but maybe take them apart and clean them agasin I guess. ALL the needles where stuck, ALL the floats were stuck.

Two things allow fuel into the bowls. Petcock, float seat and needle. I covered both. ;)
Three if you count gravity.

Did you dip the carbs per the GSR instructions?

Since you're not using a vacuum petcock, make sure you plug the vacuum port on the #2 carb. Else you'll be sucking in a lot of air and no fuel there. That might get you running on 2 out of 4. Are all of your sync ports plugged up tight and your boots in good shape?

There is fuel in the float bowl.

Did you dip the carbs per the GSR instructions? Umm I guess I have to search and find that one.....

Im going to pull it back apart today and see what I am working with.

Thanks again for the help

Okay I followed the complete clean jsut like on nthe basscliff sight on the carbs. Onlty thing is that the guy before me stripped out the pilot jets on the 2 and 3 carbs. I put it together and fired her up and she starts and idles great on 3 and 4 for but just pumps air out of the 1 and 2 until you ounch the throttle then it will stumble and then GO! on all 4. with the choke on it will either start shooting flames out of the number 1 head pipe blow air out of 2 and run alright on 3 and 4. Also the air box soes not have a good seal on the boots into the box. The boots are pretty much ruined and dont fit into the box at all really. What ya think now?
OH! i kept soakeing and spraying through the pilot jets until I got them to flow through the same holes that the clean ones did.

Get some new airbox boots

How are the boots between the carbs and the head?

Did you replace the O rings?

Did you plug the vacuum port on #2?

I bench synched the carbs already. Rejetting isnt and optin because I can not get the pilot jets out of 2 an 3 or I would do that.

The only thing I use an Easy Out is for pilot jets.
Use heat and PJ Blaster and they will come out.

Most times, you don't need to change the pilot jets. You will need to change the main jets up a few sizes, turn the mixture screws out a bit and maybe shim the needles, but most often, you don't have to change the pilots.

.

Okay so I will sttempt to remove the air screws and the pilot jets again today. What would cause the cylinders to not idle. Isnt that the mixture screw. Then the pilot jet takes you up to 1/4 throttle and the main the rest? Man what a headache, I just cant wait to get it runnin good.
Also I found a jet kit on ebay that will work with your specs to make jets. Has a lot of good feedback so I might give em a shot.

COMPLETE failure. I attempted and failed. I once again made sure that pilot cuircuit was clear with the carb cleaner. re installed them and it ran on 1 3 and 4 for about 5 seconds then back to 3 and 4. W th the choke on 1 starts to fire and 2 pops while shooting flames. Then once I turned the choke back off 1 quit and started popping and shooting flames out when it did. SO......I am buying a set of 1000 carbs that are in good running shape off ebay. since I have short straight pipes and am going to have open element filters I will see if all the extra fuel will work and adjust the jetting on the carbs ass nessasary. I am hinking the 34's will flow real nice on the 850 with pipes and filters. What do you guys think? I read a lot on that subject but didnt really find much on it. So if this works then I am going to try to make a pretty detailed post to help inform others in the future. you have been a ton of help and I hope to keep choppin gs's and keep asking you guys for help. I am wanting to do a twin next so we will see.

Shooting flames it a timing issue.
Not always..... Its a carb issue for sure. runs absoulutley great with starting fluid but once that runs off it goes right back to how it is. Meaning that the carb isnt getting fuel to the cylinder properly but when you spray a little pre vaporized fuel in her she no longer needs a carb to mix the air fuel.
