If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

New to the website. Just bought an 82 750T. Wiring seems wonky. The bike turns over like crazy, with the ignition off. No power to the plugs. I tried shorting out the wire to the coil by touchoing it to the frame while turning the bike over. Nothing. Does juice for the spark come directly from the generator, or does it come from the battery? I'm wondering if my generator is shot. Any ideas
thanks

Yikes !
Not even a spark?
Which wire at the coil?

THe org/wht is power. THe other is to/from the ignitor.

The org/wht wire Power comes from the ignition fuse.

Battery and charging system are connected together, well before the main fuse.

GS's charging system don't have any one thing that can be called a generator.
Has a stator (left side of engine case) and a regulator/rectifier (usally near/at battery box).
A general overall check of the charging system would be to measure battery voltage with engion off, and again at about 5 rpm.

I agree with both; from your questions you really need to study up on the ignition system prior to touching anything (it is far different than you described). This will prevent much sadness later.

I first tried the plug wire, with a tester, then the white wire, from the power side of the coil, pulled out of the coil and touched to the frame.I turned it over for about three seconds, and nothing. I'm really confused as to why it turns over with the ignition off, but not with it on. I can't really test the charging system, because the engine won't fire.

And quit touching wires to the frame to short out things that you don't understand!! Electrical parts are expensive and too hard to get to fry them just for fun.

In the process as we speak. I wasn't going any further back than where I was, without using a tester.

You can't test anything without a voltmeter. The voltmeter is not a tester, you are the tester. You probably blew your ignition fuse when you grounded the O/W and then had no more power there.

I know that it's a voltmeter, just had a brain fart at that moment. Actually, there was no power coming through prior to that. It may well be the fuse, but it wasn't me. As I said before, the engine only turns over when the ignition is in the off or parked position. In the on position, there's nothing. I'm pretty sure it's not a short, because when I do press the starter button, in the on position, the headlights and panel lights don't dim at all. There's no crank, just nothing. There was never a spark at any time, no light on the spark-plug wire tester.

If that is true, the ignition switch has invented a new way to operate.
