    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

hey guys,

so my bike wouldn't start up a few weeks ago. i went ahead and totally cleaned and rebuilt carbs hoping that was the problem -- guess it wasn't.

it looks like i'm not getting any spark at all from the plugs when i go to start it. i pulled them out and grounded them on the engine and saw nothing when i hit the starter. what are the most likely causes of this problem?

On ignition coils. With tank off, you will see the connectors, The small spades connect to primary circuit, the two spark plug wires form the secondary circuit.You would measure these disconnected from harness. It's unlikely that coils would be bad, but the plug caps (the holder for spark plug often cause trouble.) Make sure you have 12 volts at orange/white wire spade connector with ignition "on" and kill switch in "run". Put one multimeter probe on this o/w wire and other on good ground.
 
okay so,

i checked the contacts to ignition coils, they were crappy so i replaced them. now it starts on starting fluid -- but only fires on cylinders 1 + 3, but not 2 + 4.

1 + 3's headers are hot 2 + 4 are cold. any suggestions?

So you're using starting fluid to start it and it stays running (at least on 1 and 3 ) on its own???
 
no, it idles until the starter fluid burns away. then the engine dies.

really puzzling.
 
Puzzling too that 1 and 3 fire as they are different coils. Now did you pull the 2 and 4 plugs and ground them to the block to see if there is even a hint of spark?

You should probably try fresh plugs all around but if you still don't have spark on 2 and 4 you should suspect the plug caps. They can go bad over time, become overly resistant and not allow spark to pass. They screw in to the plug wire so easy to replace and around $8 a piece. I've had this happen on a couple of my bikes over the years.

And don't use starter fluid, that stuff can do some serious damage if over used (i.e. blow the head gasket or even the head itself) put some gas in a spray bottle or better yet clean and rebuild the carbs.

plugs are fairly new (less than 3 months) but i guess they could fail. caps are probably older than me. i'm replacing both.

but what are the odds that two caps or plugs (the ones on 2 + 4) failed at the same time? i would expect failure on only one cylinder at a time??

i could probably use a new battery. when the bike is off the battery hovers ~12v. that's a bit low right? shouldn't it be at like ~12.5?
