I got an '83 GS850 that wouldn't run. I've had some luck with non-runners in the past but this thing is kicking my butt.
First: there is no spark. I have two other GS850s to choose from for parts and here's what I've done so far:
This one had a 4 wire signal generator, like the GS1100s in my wiring diagram. My other 850s had a 2 wire. It looks like the difference is the mechanical advance vs electronic advance. OK.
So...I have removed the working signal generator and mechanical advance along with the igniter box from the running bike, and installed all three on the non-runner. Nothing.
The PO had purchased a DynaS which i installed per the instructions. No spark from either coil.
I opened the igniter box and found a resister was burned. I replaced that resister and it started smoking again. Our friend Saddlewarmer has it now to see if he can find something else wrong with it.
Since the coil was suspect I checked resistance across the positive and negative of the coil. The left read about 4 ohms, the right was about 0.8. With all these motorcycles around I've got enough coils to start a tank...each of the others read about 4...so I replaced the bad boy with one off of another motorcycle that was reading about 4 ohms. It doesn't spark either.
Voltage? With a charged battery at about 12.4 the voltage at the coils is right at 12, maybe 11.9. Just to make sure, I ran a wire from the battery directly to a coil: still nothing. I've checked voltage at the fuse and checked continuity to ground from the black/white wire at the igniter box.
I'm just not sure what I'm missing here. One not-so-good part is that it looks like someone else has been through the electrical system. It's not really a wiring harness any more as much as a collection of wires taped together. The colors are all right, but the cover is gone, so I 'm not really sure there are not connections in there that I can't see.
Still, short of rewiring the bike, I'm stumped. Any ideas?
