    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

noise at 4000K

I recenty bought this 1983 GS 1100L. When I test rode it, I did not hear any noise. Later I started to push the bike a little harder. I noticed a loud ticking noise that sounded like it was coming from the right top side of the engine when engine speed was 4000K. The noise would occur in second gear and I think third gear too. I figured it was valve noise. If I accelerated past 4000K to 5000K and finally to 6000K I did not hear the noise. It may be due to other normal engine sounds masking the ticking noise. If I rev the engine in nuetral, I hear no ticking noise. There is no unusual noise below 4000K when in gear. Could the ticking noise be due to the engine being under load or perhaps some other component in the drive train? The bike has 12600 miles and seem to have good power. I plan to check the valve clearaces. The ower of the local bike shop said to make sure that I blow out any carbon on the valves before checking them since the measurements may change if I don't first. The noise is pretty loud and I would hate to push the bike with the noise. Has any one experienced this condition in the past? Comment are appreciated.

The first thing I would check is the exhaust valve clearances on the 3 and 4 cylinders.

when you lift the valve cover , check the speedo drive gear, might as well do the valve clearences regardless, at least then you will know they are right. check and re-torque the cam caps whilst you are at it.

:oops: This is a followup incase anyone checks this post. It turns out that the noise was due to a new windshield vibrating against a side reflector. That explains why the noise only occured at 4000 rpm. A little more experience and a lot of relief.
 
Cool. I was going to say that if you somehow manage to rev the engine to 4 Million RPM (4000K) I'd expect a bit of noise... 8O
