    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

noob mistake: tried to loosen the drain nut the wrong way and lost the threads

I set out to change the oil by myself after reading basscliff's guide. Got the right tools and started the work. I forcefully turned the drain nut the wrong way trying to open instead ended up tightening the hell out of the threads in the engine area.
Realised that I was sitting and trying to turn anti-clockwise where I should have been doing clock wise.
Now It would not tighten. Any ideas how to tighten it? I dont want to pour oil and see it leaking.
There were lot of aluminium chips that came out along with the drain nut.

How do I get it back right?

Motormite makes oversize drain plugs that are self-threading and most auto parts stores sell them. I'll do a search and see if one of the old threads pops up with the part number. I've used them and they work fine.
 
There are a few ways, very common problem. Use the search, you can read about it for hours.

Thanks for that. The drain plug looked okay., but the pan seems to have been stripped off the threads.

it will never let you down, unless it's a reverse thread

Refers to threads on a screw, nut, bolt, etc. To tighten, you turn to the right (clockwise). To loosen, you turn toward the left (counter clockwise)

That's the way it goes. Even with a known good pan over time the threads weaken. It's best to pull the pan to use the oversize plugs just to make sure you get the self-tapper started straight. If you do it from under the bike use some grease on the threads to catch the aluminum that's being cut. You may need to pick up a crush washer for the new plug too.

Yes. That was running in my mind. What happened is I tilted my head down and looked under the bike and was going to do it counter clockwise., however when I sat down I changed it while adjusting as I saw my hands going clockwise and decided to do it anti clockwise.
Stupid me! It was the wrong perspective! Lesson learnt.

Thank you. The word I was looking for was "stripped drain plug". That brought a lot of results. I was trying different words and did not work. English not being my first language, messes my search keywords.

What bike is it? One of us might have a spare drain pan. Then you just need the gasket.
 
Its a 1980 GS850. I tried finding the drain plug in Canadian tire and NAPA. They dont have pluses in metric sizes anymore. Any idea where I can find them in the GTA area or is buying online the best option?

I also found another itching problem. I knew that the oil levels where too high to be seen in the level glass., as I drained, I found out that there were too much gas mixed in there. I drained it completely and temporarily pushed the plug with my hand.
After I came back from the stores, when I opened the plug, I again saw gas coming out of from the oil compartment. reading in the forums looks like Stuck carbs or Petcock problem.
I will have to figure out.
Here is the photo of how much oil came out and then it started pouring gas.

Petcock problem. If you can't find the oversize plug anywhere let me know and I can find one and pop it in a padded envelope for you.

Thanks Billy. I am going to google out and make some calls. I am sure some online store should have it if not I will PM you.

Regarding the petcock problem, I am thinking I should drain the fuel tank, fix the petcock before refilling the oil.
Is this the way to go about it?

That how to should get you through it. Some of the petcocks vary a little but they work basically the same. You more than likely have a holed diaphragm in yours.
 
Rebuilding the petcock rarely works...best to just replace it. They are not cheap, but it will work.

I will start looking at eBay also and see whats out there. Probably BikeBandit or similar site could have an aftermarket part.
