    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Hi, all I am kindof new to the site and I was wondering how to test the starter? and where is it?. First off let me give ya'll the low down on the bike. I bought it as my first bike, but soon realized that this thing was hacked up to make some sort of bobber style bike. It doesnt even have the correct exhaust(from an 850). I then found a parts bike. a 79 GS1000L that I will be doing a frame swap on. But I am trying to sell my 750 to get some extra cash.

ok now back to the problem. I layed the bike down a month ago and since then repaired what was bad. I went to start the bike the only way I could. By hot wiring it( laying a screwdriver across the terminal{not sure what that box is called} to get it to start) I was shown how to do this by previous owner since the start swich didnt work. It started and ran for a bit then cut off, so I tried to start again and it was turning real slow, then just quit, and now the dang thing wont crank. I did manage to dump the clutch to make sure the motor wassnt locked up, but i cant get enough to get it to fire up.

so my question is where is the starter and how to I test it?

Please dont beat me up with harsh words on how I was starting it. I am new to the bike world and I am learning as I go.

The starter is located on the back side of the engine, under a chrome plated cover under the carbs. If the starter doesn't turn when you jump the solenoid with a screwdriver you have a starter problem. The starter can be easily removed by removing two screws and pulling the starter back out of the hole in the engine. Pretty easy job other than having to work under the carbs where access to the parts is limited. Before going though all this I suggest you make sure your battery is charged.
 
I had the battery connected to my truck using jumpers so the bike had power. I will take it apart today. and post a reply on how it went. Thanks Mike
 
well after a nice weekend of relaxing I finnally pulled out the starter from my donor and it fired right up. only prob I am having now is my bike is almost hitting WOT on its own???? did I mess somthing up ???I will have to take a look in the am.

Check the "Electrical Odds and Ends" section on my site for tips that may help. Sounds like you need to clean your old starter and replace the brushes. If you're getting a very high idle, check for stuck throttle cable, stuck clutch cable, maybe air leaks in the air intake system. For now, I'm just going to say "HOOoooowwDY!"
