Hi, I had similar issues and spent days changing needle height and jets on the sons bike. In the end I worked out that I had left the snorkel off the rear of the stock air box. Once fitted no more issues. Anyway just wondering have you got yours on? Sometimes its just the simple things........................Regards.

Hi Ged
Yes i have attached that hose. I took the carbs off. One main jet had fell out. One of the idle circuits was plugged up. Cleaned it out. Im gonna check all the passages again just to be sure. I dont know if this was the issue but it all helps im sure.

Ok sorry for being annoying and posting so much, but heres where im at. I can get it to run all the way to redline now after taking carbs apart and setting everything to factory, but in 3rd gear it starts to bog as its accelerating, then worse with 4th, then 5th it pretty much stops at 6k. Any ideas as to what that might be?

Also, can I see the back of someones air box? Mine has like a 3x9in openeing in the back near the bottom

Edit: I looks like i have no snorkel piece i guess on the back of my airbox. Is that causing this issue? Does it matter if its on or not? I see Ged said it gave him issues? How can i get around this?

Yes mate you need it on. If you haven't got the snorkel put some tape over and block about 1/2 the hole and give the bike a run. Will look for a pic of it. Regards.

Ill try that. I think i read somewhere that the snorkel doesnt make a difference, but ill try and block that hole off a bit. This thing will be the death of me

With an attitude like that, it likely will be. :-\\\

It would be MUCH better to think "yeah, there are a few more problems than I expected, but I will conquer them!!" :encouragement:

.

Ive been trying to get it going since november! Ive taken the carbs off at least 40 times so at least thats a simple thing to do now. Just wish I knew what exactly is causing this issue. Do my jets sound right? 102 mains and 15 idles?

Do my jets sound right? 102 mains and 15 idles?

Do your jets just say "102" or do they say "102.5"? :-k

If they just say 102, they are likely not Mikuni jets and are probably the wrong size. If they say 102.5, they are only one size larger than stock, and are likely not large enough to handle your 4 into 1 exhaust, but that won't keep it from starting.

I have just gone back through this thread and can see where you mention that you have cleaned the carbs and changed the o-rings. If that has not happened, any other attempts for adjustment are futile and further suggestions are useless.

.

My main jet just said 102. That may explain it I guess. Ill Ill try to bump up a few sizes. Yes carbs have been dipped, new rubber, the works.

I did not. It just said 102 three times around the edge of of the jet. So what size should i get to compensate for the exhaust. 105s? Also I do believe that my idle fuel screws need replaced. After looking at what new ones look like, mine arent nearly as sharp.

If it had the size three times around the edge, they are NOT Mikuni jets. Not sure if Dynojet jets have a "DJ" on them, but if those are DJ jets, they are the same size as Mikuni 95s.

Z1 carries some jets. Not sure that they are Mikuni, but they are at least sized the same. As for what size, I would not go less than 105, but be ready to install a 107.5 or 110, depending on what your spark plugs tell you.

.

So the previous owner leaned it out? Makes sense considering who I bought it from.

So the new 107.5 i got were about the same size as the jets that were in it. Still the same story. full throttle it bogs down hard, almost like your hitting the brakes. Do i Keep going up in jets? I cant imagin haveing to go down still.

One thing to try, after a run open the gas cap. If you hear a "Whoosh" the vent in the gas cap is plugged and it will get leaner and leaner until it stops running.

So one thing i never did was examine the exhaust closely. The 4-1 is all nice and pretty, then the muffler is about a half inch in diameter smaller than the junction that meets up from the 4-1. Then the tip is smaller than that even. Put stock jetting in it. Ran much better. Probably needs a new muffler too so really open it up. Sounds interesting to say the least. A friend of a friend wanted a bike. so I sold it to him, although I plan to help him learn all about it. Hes very excited and rode it for the first time yesterday and loved! In the mean time ill ride my buell.
