not running in left cylinder

cleaned the carb again, top to bottom, every hole is clear, nothing is clogged. everything seems to be in working order. still doing same thing. not putting gas is left cylinder. i have a set or carbs off of a 86 gs 400 that were sitting for years but i might try and clean them and see if they work.

carbs will not fit off of the 400, carbs too close together, anybody know what suzuki bikes have the same carbs as the gs 425. going to run a compression test tomorrow

Must be some gas?

Must be some gas?

There must be some gas going in if it starts and rev's up. Or is that only on the right cylinder? Is there gas in the float bowl on the left carb? Is the valve that lets gas in the bowl working. Or is it sucking the bowl dry. Is the air screw set right? I fought my four carbs, thinking the gas/ air mixture was wrong. Till with help from this website and more checking, I found it was electrical. Keep at. Recheck what you think you know is right. Keep asking questions. It's not Magic. :D

One thing you might try is starting it with the airbox/filters in place. A lot of these carbs don't like to work otherwise. Might be a long shot, but easy to try.

Good point Sandy.. the CV carb needs that airflow in to the top hole to actuate the slide to open the main jet, but you would think that at an idle the carb would still let fuel into the cylinder and it should fire. I have had the CV experience with my 83 honda 650 nighthawk.. just a thought since thats the meaning of "CV" .... Constant Velosity of air coming into the carb down the intake boots.

Wonder if he is 100% sure there isnt a pinhole in that diaphram!! I had that once too. I went into the garage with a flashlight and the diaphram/slide assembly and shut off the light. Then i put the light on the backside and looked for any light coming thru and sure as heck there were two little spots. I bought a used one off ebay, but someone here had posted they used some kind of rubber repair cement on them to seal the pinholes.. anyone recall that?

i looked over the diaphram and it seemed fine chuck kahn. but i will try you light test. seems like its a good test to try. i didnt get the compression tester yet but im almost sure already there is compression in that cylinder. mike 10, gas is going into the bowl. and only to the cylinder when choked. ill work on it for a bit and keeps yas posted. ill try the airbox on it too but im not confident that will do anything. thanks for all the replys

I have been following your post with much interest.. seems like everything i had came across has been hit on. This just seems like its a small detail thats missing.. one way to tell if theres good intake suction is just to put the palm of your hand over the offending carb and crank it over..choke open ... it should suck you hand up to the throat with a bit of suction.. at least enough to tell if there is any. Compare what you feel to the other carb.Someone had posted that you also could put plastic wrap over the throat and do the same thing. If it has compression the wrap will go in and out like a drum skin. Just passing along things i had been told to try.. I wanna see the post where you say its all good and heres what it was !! LOL...

yea chuck i have done that about a week ago now, same in both carbs. when i do it in the carb that is not working. soon as i put my hand over the carb to choke it and give it a little throttle you can see the white smoke start to pore out the exhaust. soon as i remove my hand it goes back to nothing. i think it is just a little problem that i am having trouble finding. i am glad that there are people on this site willing to help so much.

checked the top diaphram for holes over a light. no holes. is in great shape. i have no idea what is going on, just have to keep picking at it. tomorrow i might take the bike for a drive and see how it is for power and what is going on with that cylinder upon deceleration. there is a tiny leak i noticed in front of the muffler on the non working side. im going to try taking the mufflers both off to see if i can notice if that leak is doing anything. also going to try running it with the airbox on tomorrow.

CV Carbs

CV Carbs

If you have CV Carbs the airbox must be on for it to run. I did not know this myself when I tried to start my GS1000, if I covered all 4 intakes with my arm it would start up. When I took it away the engine would die. Someone told me on this site the airbox had to be on. Solved a lot of my problems. Its a pain in the butt taking it off and on to check things but it must be done.:)

Balance the carbs

Balance the carbs

I read about a way to balance the carbs on a twin without a manometer. But I can't remember where. Must have been on this site. It was something about pulling a plug Lead off, and set one carb. Then plug the other Lead back on and match settings to the first carb. Any one else heard of this?

checked the compression today, 90 in both cylinders with just a few kicks. anybody know what kind of mikuni carb this is and what models it comes on? thanks:cool:
