    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Oh No. Too Much Oil. HELP

Alright gentlemen, my brother's bike is cursed. Well, it carries the curse of him at least.

-Here's the situation. He called me one day and asked, "how do I change the oil?" Alright, I told him what to do, upon changing the oil, he looked on the engine casing, where is it says 2600 ml and decided that was the amount of oil that it needed. (Lets back up, its a 80' GS450L).
After riding for a month, he called me because oil "exploded all over my foot"!
It was all over the head and well, his foot. Was this becaise it was over filled with oil and he blew a head gasket?

If so, what are the steps I need to take to fix this problem?
 
First of all, 2600 ml is probably about what it takes, plus a little more for the filter.

I guess the question would be "did he drain the old stuff before adding the new?" :-k

Over-filling with oil then riding for a month will not blow a head gasket.

I think the oil "explosion" is due to other causes.

You need to check the oil level, wash the bike, then run it for a bit to see where it is leaking.

according to the service manual the bike takes 2600ml (2.7 US qts)
without the filter change, with the filter change 2900ml (3.1 US qts)
 
Yes sir, he told me he drained it all out and replaced the filter. Everything that I read lead me to believe it was over filled. I've drained it and sprayed it down since, I've just been a bit too concerned to put new oil in and start it up. I don't want to warp anything. Any Idea on what would cause a leak out of the head that bad?
 
I called my mechanic, he just said is a blown head gasket because its probably never been replaced. Sorry brother, you're not too dumb after all.
 
Blown head gasket maybe? But you won't know until you diagnose the problem.

You ever torque the head as part of normal maintenance like the Suzuki manual directs? A properly installed head gasket, followed by proper maintenance, and it will last the life of the bike.

I kinda wonder, I know he's calling it a head gasket leak but is it really a failed valve cover gasket?

I agree.
It could very well be a small leak like a tach seal or two and he has blown it all out of proportion.

Another possibility is that the petcock is leaking fuel into the engine over filling it and blowing out the breather
