    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

My friend has a 1983 gs 550 cruiser and is having some shifting issues. Sometimes when you go to shift the bike the shift linkage jams and does not allow you to shift. If you let off pressure and pry up a few times it will finally go. It also does this downshifting aswell. The shift linkage is tight on the shaft and centered. I don't know what would cause this. I am 99% sure this is not his transmission. Plus the bike has only 7k miles on it.

Can you but a vice grip on the motor shifter shaft without buggering up the splines and see if it shifts ok? Does the linkage have back and forth play in it?
 
The first thing I would do is make sure the clutch and clutch cable are in good shape and adjusted according to spec - if the clutch isn't disengaging cleanly, it will dang sure be hard to shift.

I'm assuming with only 7K miles on it, that the oil isn't all full of gunk, with could also be preventing disengagement.
 
"Mark whiz" has you on the right track. Those are traditional clutch sticking problems. Many aftermarket clutches will also do this, but not as bad as your problem. Also when changing oil use 10W-30 or 40. 20w-50 caused me problems in VA and in Wisconsin it would be worse.
 
Are these the ones with the shifter attached to a linkage assemble instead of right to the shifter shaft? If so lube the beejeebees out of the ball and socket pivot points with Kroil or WD and work it.
 
they are the kind NOT connected right to the shaft, it has alot of linkage.. Also it is 10w-40 oil and it is the shifter that seems to jam
