A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Oil Change after New Rings

I just got my bike back together and ran her after new rings, cylinder honing and valve job. I have read many threads on breaking in the engine (different opinions), so I think I have this down.
What I couldn't find was when to change the oil after the top overhaul. There is going to be extra metal in the oil. So, I am sure that it will need to be changed sooner than normal.
When should I change the oil for the first time?
How often should I change it before I return it to it's normal oil change interval?

Depending on how you break it in (I do mine the quick method), first oil change can be within 25-50 miles,
another one at about 200, then continue with your regular intervals.

.

Steve's method strikes me as overkill; there's not THAT much crap in the oil and the filter is there to take it out anyway.

I'd do one oil change at 150 miles or so and another maybe 1000 miles later.

STEVE please explain the quick method as I plan to have my new motor running soon.

I think I did about the same; including head retorque at about same intervals. Maybe closer to 50 and 500 miles

The only difference is the interval. :o

I try to do the first one long enough after oil has had a chance to flow through all the passages to flush out the crap, but soon enough to get rid of it to prevent anything from clogging up. You still do an early change, you just wait longer. :D

even a brand new bike I'd just change the filter after 100miles...justa top end?? 500 probably yer wasting good oil,but it's yours to waste.

Hi,

If I'd just done all that work I would probably err on the side of overkill. Oil and filters are cheap enough. But that's just me. :)

Thank you for your indulgence,

BassCliff

Been thinking about this some more and think that if a lot of crud gets into your engine when pulling the cylinders or decarbonizing the pistons then adding that extra oil change couldn't hurt. If you are building an engine from scratch and keeping it clean from the start I wouldn't bother.

I'm way more anal than most about taking care of my engine but I wouldn't bother with two oil changes inside 200 miles.
