    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Oil cooler oil amount

I have looked and didn't seem to find what I was looking for. I plan to add an oil cooler to my gs750 and am wondering if I need to add extra oil over the stock amount??? It seems like the bike would run low with the extra of the oil cooler
 
You could start the bike and let it set the 2 minutes as the manual says and note the level with a piece of tape at the oil level. Then add the cooler and run its again and note the change. Im guessing it may take another 5 or 6 ounce to return it to the previous level.
 
When you turn off the engine the oil will drain back out of the cooler so it's hard to judge oil level based on the sight glass after you add a cooler.
 
Well you cant do it running so whats the answer?? Just fill it to the F mark and as long as it never gets below the L mark theres no worries???
 
So would it hurt anything to have it a little overfilled when it's only sitting??? When it starts up it would be pumped all around and into the cooler anyway correct? I was thinking it wouldn't hurt but wanted to check and see.
 
You could disconnect the oil lines and fill the lines and the cooler to see how much it holds and then over fill by that amount so the oil level is at it's correct volume in the crankcase while it's running. Me, i just overfilled by about 1/3 quart or less and kept in topped up accordingly. In reality it probably doesn't matter much as long as you don't let the oil get all the way to the add level as the running oil volume in the crankcase will now be lower than recommended.
 
This is not an ideal method but you could clamp off the hoses feeding the cooler immediately after shutting down the engine thus trapping the oil in the lines and cooler. Then adjust the oil level per the sightglass. This would only work if you are running rubber lines to the cooler and I wouldn't do it regularly or the hoses could be damaged.

Would it do it if your lines were at the bottom of the cooler, but were routed above it before going down to the engine? :-k

Just not sure if it would siphon out or not.

I guess it would depend on the bike, whether the overhead line routing would be practical. Isn't it the 1150 that has lines coming from the oil filter area? They would go straight up to the cooler, but most of the other bikes would have an adapter installed behind the cylinders.

Having the lines on the top solves that problem. The oil cooler stays full and the site glass is at the correct level with the engine off. It's more expensive in terms of fittings, it also means you should take the cooler off and empty it when changing your oil.

I haven't bought the cooler core yet so all this is bringing up some very fine points... Having the lines coming from the top of the cooler can solve the oil level issue but I'll have to look at any fitment issues then... I have several motorcycle bone yards around me to look through and see what I can get... I like the idea of the lines coming over the top as long as the oil is not siphoned out causing the crank case to overfill... I will have to see how much the cooler holds to start with... Thank you for all the help
