A Special Note about Email accounts!
DO NOT SIGN UP USING hotmail, outlook, gmx, sbcglobal, att, bellsouth or email.com. They delete our forum signup emails.

A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Oil filter conversion

Has anyone tried to convert from the typical cover, spring, odd shaped gasket, and cartridge filter to the screw on type oil filters? This would make it much easier to change the oil on my bike. Currently I have to remove the exhaust and oil cooler lines to change the oil.

I've thought about it. Unfortunately, I see no way of doing this without fabricating an adaptor. The adaptor would cost too much per unit unless there was a demand for them.

I've fabed different parts for my project bike and they are costly as 'one off's'.

Sure would be easier and nice to have it that way though. I have been trying to figure it out as well. I should put it into the hands of my mechanical engineering buddies. They should be able to figure it out.

Would the low-pressure system of the GS handle a spin-on filter?

I hate to say this, but I have a friend with an old sportster that has a spin on filter. That bike only runs 15psi max oil pressure, so a filter for a HD (AARRGH!!) would work.

I am flogging myself for even having this knowledge!

Don't beat yourself up to badly. I would suspect a wide variety of filters would work here.

I don't think it would be that hard to put together a CAD program for this. Again, the issue is price per unit. The first one will probably be in the $300 range. If you make 10 of them, then they are going to probably be $125 each, and 100 for maybe $50 each.

Now, $50 each may not sound bad, but that means you need $5k cash to do that. You need a lot of pre-pays for the low prices. (I'm just giving a guess on the price based on my previous experience)

Check www.emachineshop.com for the program (it's free). I've had a few items fabed through these guys. They also have online tutorials so you can get an idea of what is possible.

Well, I'll havta let ya know how it's working out for me. I just recently plumbed in a spin on oil filter onto my gs750e. I put it in the oil cooler circuit. Things appear to be working okay for now. As of yet I haven't been able to ride it. But it idles fine, no oil leaks. Well... no NEW oil leaks. I still have that trickle, seap, really slow drip coming outta the cam cover end cap. I'll fix that one of these days. My ride has a taken a back burner until I finish building the deck and the rest of the honey do list... :( -sigh I just havta figure out how to put a new chain, tire, license plates, etc and so forth on that list.
