A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Thanks Chuck. I've had vise grips on it but can't get it to turn. I thought I was doing it right the first time. Lots of PB Blaster, whack with a hammer, tighten a little loosen a little, whack again and repeat. Worked for a couple of turns then.......Doh !! :D { didn't use heat because it was turning } oops....

Corrosion particles are a real BIIIITCH when extracting. They jam the threads easily. Good thing about exhaust studs is you can get the flame up inside where the pipes go and get that sucker good and hot!!

If you go to sears, they have the kits and they work really well. Mine have the 3/8 ratchet type fittings so i just use my ratchet and start them out. Tap the extractor onto the stud with a few easy taps with the hammer to get them gripping good has been my experience. If they slip, they just chew off even more of the stud...which sucks big time.

The only one from Sears Canada they show on line is this one for $105. ouch

Or this one for $16 at Princess Auto.

I LIKE that Prince Auto one!! One tool for many sizes...much more efficient looking than then ones I have too. Those teeth look like they can grab a much shorter stud than these Craftsman ones I have. Who makes that one? I am interested inn buying myself one too.

The top one is from Sears the one below is from Princess. I don't see teeth on that one ?

Yes. I want one of them. Guess the available space around the broke stud would also play a factor in whats gonna fit in there, so maybe a set of the craftsmans AND that Prince Auto one would be good to have in the tool kit.

Yeah, space was what I was thinking too. I'll check it out for you. They also have these which look similar to the Sears ones. They're cheap. Maybe I'll pick up both as you suggest.

What are some of the more successful techniques for removing and reinserting the oil filter cover bolts?

I figured removing could probably be done with a good pair of vice-grips. However, reinserting is more tricky as I don't want to damage the threads. Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Thanks,

Use two nuts locked against each other to tighten the stud. It doesn't need to be overly tight. Some blue loctite wouldn't hurt.

The current studs appear to be OEM... would you expect a lot of difficulty in pulling them out? Any tricks you'd recommend to avoid breaking one off?
