A note to old forum members...
I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

Oil filter o-ring seal?

The first few oil changes did on the bike I reused the o-ring on the oil filter retaining plate and never had a problem with leaks. Then I made the mistake of using a new one that came with the STP filter and now it has a slow leak that annoys me, not like its dripping constantly but it gets the cover oily and drips small amount. Has anyone had better success with other brands or any tips to help this? Thanks, Ed

I have always used Fram never had a problem! You can get the OEM O ring from your dealer if you need one

Ditto.

I heard some aftermarket filters came with undersized orings recently; smaller diameter.

I had success with fram for a couple of years then i got 3 leakers in a row. Now i use o.e.m. seals and keep a spare in stock. Too large--too small--too thin. wierd?????

I bought OEM "O" rings from the dealer for oil changes. I bought 6, all were under size and none sealed. I'm still making do with the original that came on the bike. It doesnt leak.......yet. :-)

These posts make me wonder who the culprit is with these oil rings.

Gee, that's odd. The only ones I've ever used have been aftermarket ones that come with the filters, sometimes reusing them if I get a filter that doesn't have an o-ring. I've never had a leaker in the bunch! :D

I have a stock of GS1000 and GS1100 orings from the days when the filters came with one for each. I just reuse the old one, clean it up and put a very thin smear of silastic on it each time I put it back on. I have never ever had a leak. One day I may change it.

I guess this is a good lesson for everybody then, if the seal doesn't leak don't change it

They still do. They are called "Hi-Flo Filtro" HF-133. I get them from my local non-dealer motorcycle shop, have for years. 8)
