If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

Doing my first oil change and read BassCliff's writeup about. He says the FRAM number for an oil filter is CH6000, but the FRAM book that I looked at says CH6018... it did not, however cover the 1980 GS 450, but all the other motors in all years from 1982 up listed the same filter number.
Who is right? Which do I use?

Thanks!
Jeremy

Ch6000 is a plain filter

ch6018 i couldn't find but PH6018 is a nomal car style can filter

Google image it and you'll see the difference.

the 450's have a plain filter.

Oh, ok I see. I assume this means a car style can filter will not work?

nope, although a mod like that would be nice.

When you take the front cover off and look at yours you'll see why it will only work with this type.

There is usually quite a bit more oil that comes out when you take the cover off so be prepared :p

FRAM filters are among the worst. I can't cite my sources immediately but if you do some research on oil filter effectiveness you'll surely find it.

I used an Emgo filter, and it looked decent enough. Definitely better than what was in there......

I wouldn't put a Fram on any engine.

I took the taster's test on the Fram car filter, and cut one open. I can't say I'm a fan. The cardboard media and end caps are just plain cheap. I run Purolator Pure One or Wix (when I can find them) on my Jeep, and a K&N on my 55. The little nut welded to the end is worth the extra few bucks by itself. Now I do run a Fram fuel filter with my external pump setup on my 55, and it's a quality piece.
My understanding is there are 2 different Fram oil filters, and the ones made in Mexico are the cheapies with the cardboard, but the ones made in the US are of better quality. I've heard this said, but never seen a comparison. Not sure if it's the same for MC filters, though.

Isn't the difference just which oil filter cover gasket is included?

Here's a link to a comparison chart with photos:
(I actually don't use fram either on any of my vehicles, and haven't for some time.)

I have recently started using the K&N oil filters on my bike.

I use K&N(I know they are not the best - I have read the articles) for the triumph's spin because they have
a 17mm nut welded on the end to facilitate easy changing. Handy.

Okay those are all spin on filters. Anything about the open filter types?

On my bike I run Wix or Napa (same thing) or K&N.
AFA Fram auto filters, their cheap one that they give away if you buy oil is the bad one. The Extra Guard that has the black crinkle for spinning it off is adequate. I still use other brands, though.
