Oil fliter replacement GS650

Hi all...

I was wondering what the steps are to replace the oil fliter on a GS650 (81' model) is it pretty striaght forward??

Ayup. Straight forward. Pull the three acorn nuts that hold the cap on, remove the washers and cover. Keep an eye out for the spring that sits right under the cover against the filter. Pluck the old filter out, clean all surfaces, install new filter and button it up using a new oring on the cover.

If you are new to doing this, be very careful not to use a lot of force on the nuts when you tighten up the cover....the o-ring makes the cover oil-tight and does not need to be much more than snug to do so :wink: .

Before you remove the cover (the three acorn nuts) remove the big drain plug which is located in the cover. This will drain the filter cavity and make cover removal much less messy.

This will also make a bunch more oil bloot out of the engine drain. So unless you have a big enough drain pan to fit under both, put the engine plug back in loosely, drain filter, move pan back under engine and remove engine plug again.

Also if it's an L model (shaft drive), don't forget to drain the right angle drive while you're doing the oil change.

forgive me... but the oild fliter cap is located on the front of the engine... below the oil cooler ?

I have four into one exaust system.. so I dont know if its going to be able to slip past...?

If you must...sometimes its possible to pass the filter between the two inner header pipes...depending on exhaust brand...I used to be able to do this, but now with the oil cooler in place, its not possible....the cooler now has to be unhooked and moved a bit...no big deal.
