Been lurking for some time and I feel bad that my first post is asking for help but I'm at a loss. My 1980 GS850L (I know) with 11,000 miles started running rough several days ago. It started to leak oil (definitely oil not carbon and gas) pretty steadily out of the joint between the headers and the muffler. I also noticed a gas smell. Also noticed gas and oil dripping from the engine around #2 header plus smoking when you revved the throttle. Pulled #2 plug wire and no change to how it was running. #2 is definitely not firing.
What I have done so far. Switched plugs, Swapped 2&3 plug wires (no change still #2) I checked compression. #2 was the lowest at 120. If I recall correctly #1 was 140 #3 was 125 #4 was 135. Also valve clearances were in spec. I was thinking maybe carb related but would that explain the oil and gas leaking? Decided to tear it down and the rings look okay visually. No stuck valves. Put it back together and no change.
I may be leaving out something but if anybody has any thoughts on what the best direction to go in is I would appreciate it greatly. I don't really have the money to start replacing parts with the hope that it fixes it.
