    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message.   • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Oil leak yuck!!! What can I do?

I have an oil leak. I'm almost certain well I am certain its coming from the oil sending unit is there a quick fix for this? I was going to wait till the next oil change and take the sending unit out clean thing up then put some gasket sealer on it. Will this approach work? Has anyone had this same problem before. My bike is an 82 GS650glz oil sending unit is on left side under the exhaust pipe. when it leaks it runs down the kick stand. Not much oil loss to speak of but sure makes a mess unless I remember to put cardboard under the kick stand. Thanks in advance for you advice.

The simplest and cheapest thing to do may be to just wrap the threads on the sending unit with teflon tape and put it back in.

You need to check and see if it indeed leaking from the threads or from the sending unit housing itself.
 
Sometimes the oil in that area is coming from the auto chain adjuster also.
 
Scotty's right, check the Cam Chain Adjuster also.... Mines leaking like a sieve right now :?

If that happens to be the trtouble. One of the gang found that a metric o ring can be purchased from some hardware stores instead of paying a rediculous price at the Suzuki dealer. I dont know who it was and didn't take the information down. I wish i did. Mine leaks also.

My cam chain tensioner is pouring oil
and it wells up in the starter housing and pours
out the drain hole in the bottom.
It's making a mess.
I know there was a previous thread about converting
them to a manual adjuster.
Would this conversion stop the leaking?
Does anyone know?

I'm sure of exactly where it coming from and I'm pretty sure its the oil sending unit(has wires coming out of a sealed piece, but the unit I'm refering to has two screws holding it in the oil pan?bottom of engine case? No oil above this unit anywhere so must becoming from around this item. Is this the oil sending unit its just forward of the foot peg on that side and bleow the covers on the lower cranckcase area of the engine.

Mine is converted to manual and it has nothing to do with the leaking. If i remember correctly, there is a worn O ring or 2 that cause the leaking.

Mi sender leaks also but none of the leaks are so bad. ill bet that a gasket ot o ring can be easily gotten. Lots of other folks have had that problem and repaired. Im sure someone will tell you the proceedure.
 
The oil sending unit should be behind the #3 cylinder on the top side
Underneith my guess is that it is the gear position indicator. probably
just a bad O ring/ gasket

Are you sure you aren't looking at the sidestand indicator light switch? It looks like it is part of the motor but it's not. The wires for it run up inside the countershaft sprocket cover. You may have a leak inside the cover and the oil is just following the wires to the sidestand switch. If that's the case the leak is probably coming from the seal for the clutch pushrod. SqDancer is right about the oil sending unit being on top of the crankcase. On my bike there is also an oil temperature sensor under the cover for the ignition signal generators.
 
Billy the clutch pushrod seal that would mean that the oil leaking would be gear oil and would be black and much thicker and tackyer than engine oil right? That explains the black oil so what am I into to replace that seal and while I'm at it I'll need to drain all drive train gear oil and would like to know if you have the info what the capacity is for my 1982 GS 650 Glz.
 
The gearbox is lubed by the motor oil. It's a simple fix. Just pry out the old seal and install the new one. Somewhere Scotty has a post on it. Maybe in the Tips and Tricks section. I forgot you have shaft drive, but the transmission is still lubed by the crankcase oil. You shouldn't have to drain anything and oil loss will be very minimal when you pull the seal.

But I, just tonight after two gloroious years of maintence free riding found a leak tonight. I think its coming from the gear shifter indicator like this thread suggested.

but if I take this off will all the oil drain out this fitting? I have a cylmer manual for the bike its a gs 1100 1984 shaftie. shes emaculate in her condition and very clean. only one owner before I got her. But I do know that oil will flow all over the place while riding. I belive this is my problem, but would like to know where this seal can be purchased or modified? is this easy to find? I am going to clean her up tomorrow and start her up. To see if she will leak agian. Most of the oil is on the kick stand and the bottom part of the cover that shows the gears positions, any help will be greatly appricated. I hope this is the problem. also too I did notice the phillip heads the hold in the sensor were a little loose so i tightened them, and there is this one number 12 mm bolt up underneath the houseing of the gear shifter, that seems to be loose as well. but I dont want to strip her out.
