Thumbing through an old Chilton's repair manual for the 77-78 GS 750's reveals regular cleaning of the oil sump screen is suggested. Manual published in 1978 says the screen should be cleaned every 6K miles.
This is news to me, so I check out the Suzuki factory repair manual to confirm. Sure enough, under Periodic Maintenance Group 10 it refers to 6K cleaning of the Oil Sump Filter.
Is anyone actually doing this as regular maintenance? I can see doing this after mechanical engine repair or replacing the sump gasket to correct an oil leak from an aged gasket.
My 750 has seen frequent oil changes since new with oil filter changed with each time over its 30K miles (It seems I missed 5 screen cleanings). Never worked on engine internals, besides valve shim adjustment. Thus can't see what large particles (or crud) would be on the oil pickup screen.
