    A note to old forum members...
    I receive numerous requests from people who can no longer log in because their accounts were deleted. As mentioned in the forum FAQ, user accounts are deleted if you haven't logged in for the past 6 months. If you can't log in, then create a new forum account. If you don't get an error message, then check your email account for an activation message. If you get a message stating that the email address is already in use, then your account still exists so follow the instructions in the forum FAQ for resetting your password.

    Have you forgotten your password or have a new email address? Then read the forum FAQ for details on how to reset it.

    Any email requests for "can't log in anymore" problems or "lost my password" problems will be deleted. Read the forum FAQ and follow the instructions there - that's what we have one for...

  • Returning Visitors

    If you are a returning visitor who never received your confirmation email, then odds are your email provider is blockinig emails from our server. The only thing that can be done to get around this is you will have to try creating another forum account using an email address from another domain.

    If you are a returning visitor to the forum and can't log in using your old forum name and password but used to be able to then chances are your account is deleted. Purges of the databases are done regularly. You will have to create a new forum account and you should be all set.

Ok you all probally kknow i have a 1979 GS550L well... so i thought. as you may have seen i have had some "ignition problems or was also diagnotis as possible fuel problem" well my battery died again (brand new battery) so here come the fun part... i look in the manual and it says i have a regulator and a rectifer well i looked high and low couldnt find it so i fliped to a page for 1980 gs550lt and BAM 1980 the combined it all into one... so im thinking maybe somone changed it to that style regualtor is it possible?
well anyways it seeems to be i need an alternator is this hard to do i have the clymer manual and they discuss it in like 1 paragraph but that doesnt tell me how hard it is to do in the "real world"
 
look at the stator papers in the garage section from the home page. they are very informative and should answer all your ?'s
 
It's not tough to do. You have to pull the stator wires through the upper crankcase and out with the cover and stator. You'll need an impact driver to get all the phillips head bolts out. Locktite for reintalling them.

There was even a discussion once about using a set of jumper cables to help get the cover off.

As far as the regulator and rectifier go. doesnt one of those models have something hidden under the batter case. i seem to recall athread on that sort of thing.
8O Boy is it difficult not to bring up the Jumper cable thing :lol: :lol: :lol:
 
Before you go any further, do the tests in the Stator Papers.
You may find you have a loose connection or something equally weird (and cheap and easy!!)
Let us know your progress.
 
well i hope no one kills me but my brother KAWASKAI bayou 220 had the SAME stator in it WOOHOO but different conections and it works WIERD lol but my voltage regulator was on its way out so i need to get one from a 1980 b/c the person i had switch the systems 1979 had seperate rectifer and regulator 1980 and on had all in one thanks for the tips and I DIDNT USE THE JUMOPER CABLES little pull, tug here and there came right off
